Whether we are able to face it or not, we have let a goodly portion of what we are all about slip from our grasp!

Once upon a time, a bunch of farmers and dreamers dared to challenge the might of the greatest empire on Earth. Knowing full well that their chances of success were less than nothing, these genuine he-men not only braved a wilderness and hostiles, they also took on the combined might of the British Empire - a goliath in its time that had not known the taste of defeat!

Our enemy back then was well defined, and even though the world gave us no chance of success, a few good men came together to test the impossible waters of liberty, and to dare to accomplish what had never before been tried before that time!

Against all odds, we succeeded in pinning the tail on the donkey of fate, and managed to pull off the same magnificent feat, time and time again, against the best that the planet could throw at us! We arose like a mighty flood, and the tempest of our deeds was only matched by our magnificent sacrifices. ?Sacrifices that were offered up upon an altar of blood sweat and tears!?

The gage of the men and women who call America home today is of no less value than that of our forefathers. The only problem, as I see it, is that a scant few (as numbers go) have chased the beast of opportunism, and in the process, have abandoned the spirit of ?Greatness Through Mutual Effort and Sacrifice? that guided us up the ladder of destiny to begin with.

As a nation, we still possess the workers, the dreamers, the doers, and the warriors that sanctified our soil in times past. Unfortunately, however, we have also acquired far too many users, free ride artists, and clique weasels - the latter being the most dangerous of all! These, after all, are the weaklings who lack the craw to buck the tide, make waves, or fight the ogres of absolute power, even when their eroded consciences tell them the proper path to take!

Worse yet, are the political, monetary and even religiously unchallenged powers, who assure the wrong doers that all is well, even the Hell of their own creation! For after all is said and done, there is power in numbers, even when those numbers are misguided, weak in character, and evil to the core!

I have been taught that every human is born with a conscience. Unfortunately, however, those who have abandoned their conscience along the way, have convinced many others that a conscience is just excess baggage? Or as I was once informed by a prominent politician, my integrity was nothing to be proud of, but rather, the reason why I (personally) would never amount to a hill of beans!? (SO BE IT!)

It must be noted, however, that I can still look myself in the face when I shave, eyeball to eyeball. And if I never amount to what many consider to be a success, I still believe that I am the master of my own soul!

Having studied Geology in my younger days, I learned the age of the Earth is numbered in billions of years. Our brief existence on Earth, however, is usually far less than a century. And for that century of comfort, far too many human beings, are willing to risk an eternity of possible damnation. And that in my book is being penny smart and pound-foolish!

Humanity also seems to have a fetish with hero worship, but unfortunately, some of the heroes that we select as idols, are from the dark side of human nature, and have never bathed in the light of truth, justice, or what use to be the American Way! And for the record, many of those, whom we elevate to temporary stardom, are in reality, the lowest dregs of existence!

Will we be as loyal and subservient to these vile creatures in the great beyond, as we were while we were trapped within human flesh?
