Default No Turkey For Thanksgiving

I remember reading a story a while back written by a neutralist named Gary Null about when the Pilgrims sat down at the table and broke bread with Chief Massasoit and a few other council members of the Wampanoag Tribe, turkey was more of a side dish rather than being the entree. He went on to say the Wampanoag Tribe was not big meat eaters and their diet consisted mostly of vegetables. I was wondering if anyone else ever read or heard of the same story ?
