Detective: Half Of Reported Carjackings Are Lies False Police Reports Cost Department Time, Money KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A man who recently said he was carjacked by a pregnant woman has been charged with making a false report. According to Kansas City detectives, the story was made up; the pregnant woman the man described was really a prostitute, KMBC's Lara Moritz reported. Detective Darrell Reach said that half of reported carjackings turn out to be lies. "The reason to do that is most likely they were involved in an illegal activity at which time they did lose their vehicle, and weren't actually the victim of a carjacking," Reach said. Other phony carjacking stories have involved botched drug deals, Moritz reported. "So then the victim becomes panicky wanting his car back, and he says, 'Oh my God, I've traded my car for drugs. How am I going to report this?'" Reach said. The detective added that investigators have gotten very good at deciphering the truth from lies when it comes to carjacking stories. "You file a false police report and we're going to arrest you for it," he said. Hours spent working on false reports costs investigators time and police departments money. Every other day in Kansas City, someone reports a carjacking, Moritz reported.
