James,
Did you keep a copy of your DD214? I made a miniture to keep in my wallet. If not just get your birth certificate and your social security number and go to a local VA center they will help you secure a copy of your Discharge papers.

PAPERS
In some states your discharge papers were sent to your city or county veterans agent. You might want to check there. If they have it it's a lot quicker. If they don't have it, when you get a new one, give the local VA or veterans agent a copy they have to keep them on file, so you'll never be in this fix again.

Discharge Certificate
I'd like to point out a couple of things here.
If you were in the Merchant Marines during WWII & Korea you wouldn't have a military discharge unless you specifically applied for one in the past. Merchant Marine service was not considered "active military service" until January 1988. And this only includes Merchant Marine service during WWII, not Korea or any subsequent service. There is a specific form that has to be completed in order to receive a DD 214 for your WWII Merchant Marine service. It is DD Form 2168. I have attached a PDF version of the form. You should fill it out and send it to the appropriate agency as shown on the second page.

Thanks for the leads gents. My DD 214 went missing a bit ago when I moved back to Nevada from Tennessee. It?s that time of life where I need to get everything in one place just in case and I?ve been concerned about the DD214 as thats an important document. Thanks again.
