![]() lived large, Ron. Never saw an air mattress in the 101st. Slept on the ground the whole time. Hell, we were lucky to get clean jungle fatigues every couple of months.
We operated around Kontum in the Highlands from the end of NOV66 to the end of JAN67. I can recall several nights freezing my ass off after the sun went down; especially after humping in the rain, or that Central Highlands mist that hangs in the hills, all day. I was in Dalat, in the southern Central Highlands, early last week. In the day it was in the low-mid 60's with the wind blowing pretty good. At night the wind dropped off, but the temp dropped into the mid 50's. I wore a light jacket the whole time there when we were outside. It was weird to see the V'namese running around in down coats and winter hats. You'da thought we were in Korea in January ![]()

![]() On a LP north west of Khe Sanh , late May 71 , I crouched in a shallow hole while a lot of NVA walked by us talking up a storm. It was raining hard and I held my jaw tight cause I was afraid they would hear my teeth chattering.

![]() About 3 weeks before going to Khe Sahn. A cold front blew in and it got down to around 70. No jackets, blankets just a pancho liner to keep warm. After normal temp of > 99 and lows of 85 to 90 the drop to 70 was like and icy winter blast.

![]() I remember knocking the plugs out of the firewall on our trucks to get some heat into the cab during the monsoon season.

![]() Those monsoon rains were cold . We did not have much equipment to deal with the rain. Ponchos were noisy clumsey, dang things and not worn on patrols. Seems to me we got some nylon raincoats which worked very well .

![]() We used our air mattresses when on wet ground for sure. We usually spread ponchos above and below for shelter and ground protection for air mattresses. If it was dry, I preferred the ground. But I was a skinny, nearly weightless thing back then.
