NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today traveled to New Haven, Conn. to visit Yale University and deliver remarks to faculty and students at a town hall meeting, hosted by the Jackson Institute of Global Affairs—highlighting the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) efforts to ensure our nation’s safety and security through international partnerships.

“Today, America is stronger and more secure than it was ten years ago, and our international partnerships have been essential to that security,” said Secretary Napolitano.* “Security is a shared responsibility and by working with partners across the country, and increasingly with partners around the world, we will continue to build a strong foundation for a secure and resilient homeland.”

During her remarks, Secretary Napolitano underscored the Department’s partnership with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and countries around the world to strengthen the international aviation system against evolving terrorist threats.* Last year, more than 190 countries came together to adopt the historic Declaration on Aviation Security at the ICAO Triennial Assembly.**

DHS has also been working closely with the international community on initiatives such as Project Global Shield—launched in 2010 by DHS, the WCO, INTERPOL, and the UN Office of Drugs and Crime—bringing together more than 80 participating nations in an unprecedented multilateral law enforcement effort aimed at combating the illicit cross-border diversion and trafficking of precursor chemicals for making improvised explosive devices (IED) by monitoring their cross-border movements.

DHS has more than 1,500 personnel in 75 countries around the world, the third-largest international footprint of any civilian U.S. government agency.

Tomorrow, Secretary Napolitano will travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. to join Michigan Governor Rick Snyder as well as stakeholders from the public and private sector at the Michigan Cyber Summit to discuss the Department’s cybersecurity initiatives and kick off National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
