Question Hue City Hosts Vietnam Veterans

Hue City Hosts Vietnam Veterans

By Ensign Danielle Leppo, USS Hue City Public Affairs

ABOARD USS HUE CITY (NNS) -- Twenty-four Vietnam
Veterans visited USS Hue City (CG 66) on the 35th anniversary
of the Battle of Hue City.

Guests said the visit, centered around Maine's 56th Annual
Lobster Festival, brought back memories of one of the most
intense battles of the Vietnam War. It also served as a reminder
that both the battle and the members of the Marine Corps' 1st
and 5th Regiments have not been forgotten.

"Hue City pays tribute to the veterans as the only warship named
after a Vietnam War battle," said Hue City's Command Master
Chief Mark Dubeil. "Our ship proudly displays the Marine
Corps, American and Navy flags, in remembrance of those who
gave their lives fighting for the ancient city of Hue."

The fortress on the ship's crest symbolizes the Marines' seizure
of the Citadel in Hue, while the dragon represents the
forcefulness with which the Marines achieved their victory. Hue
City, its crest and its fighting motto of 'fidelity, courage, honor'
instills the spirit of those victorious Marines, Soldiers and Sailors
at the Battle of Hue City into each and every crew member.

"Visiting with the Sailors made me proud to be a veteran, and
better yet, an American," said one teary-eyed veteran.

Thanks but the web page did not show up at my spot. I did not know there was a ship called the USS Hue City. I'd like to say that boats like mine, both Army and Navy --- played a part in that battle: I only went down the Perfume River after the famous battle.

Sorry about that. Sometimes I forget to delete the period at the end of the sentence. It's fixed now.

Interesting name for a Cruiser. Usually they are named after US Cities. I knew the Topeka, Oklahoma City, St Paul, Newport News, Columbus and Chicago. The only one not named after a US City at the time was the Canberra. Man, this makes me feeling ancient. The newest Cruiser hull number during my time was the USS Columbus, CG 12.

But Hue City is an excellent name for a Cruiser as the battle for the citadel was a nasty and brutal fight and the Marines made it happen and won the day, as usual.
