Registered to :Aug 21, 2001 Messages :35 From :West Haverstraw, NY Posted 22-09-2001 at 16:07 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tamaroa Not For Profit Group - We are looking into the formation of a group known as the Friends of the Tamaroa. It will be a not for profit group dedicated to a number of things. Here is a partial list. As a trule friend of her or a past crew member, we would be interested in hearing from you about additional goals for the group. among the items we are entertaining are: 1)Lobby the CG to name another cutter Tamaroa. 2)Provide support for other Ex-cutters headed for the scrap pile. 3)Promote the contributions of work boats such as tugs and fireboats to the fabric of American society. 4)Provide support to whoever owns the Tamaroa to use her for educational purposes relative to the sea. 5)Raise funds in the event that the Tamaroa comes up for sale again, so that we can purchase her. If any of you have other ideas that we can use to provide the foundation for an application for not for profit status, we would appreciate hearing from you. e-mail coastie166@aol.com. TAMAROA is up for sale again.
The price is in the neighborhood of $650,000.00. Pretty steep considering that she was built in 1943 and she's been sunk twice. I saw the advertizement in a Marine Engineering Journal and as soon as I can find the ad again I'll post it here.

colmurph,
well we got her! If you want to check out our website it is www.tamaroa.org. Technically, she didn't get sunk twice. She sunk in dry dock in 63 and she literally got blown out of the water and landed on a beach in 45. there is a photo of her in our Zuni history page of her sitting on the beach next to a truck. We expect great things from her in the next couple of years. Regards, Bill

Glad you got her! I bunked with the guy who came back from a gin mill in Curtis Bay and opened the valves on one side of the dock. They made him her engineer for life! I met him in 1974 when I was on her as a Law Enforcement Advisor and he'd pretty much had a carreer on her. I guess he retired off of her. Are you going to be able to replace the 3" mount that used to be on the wardroom roof? The picture of her in the Marine Engineering Journal shows her with armament stripped.

Colmurph,
Mount 31 along with a lot of other items was stripped from her when she was decommed and towed to the Intrepid. They even swiped her steering wheel. While she was at the intrepid, they temporarily installed a 3 incher on her, but it was the wrong model and painted gray. Our gun was black. I was a little more than familiar with Mount 31 since i was the hotshellman when I was on board her. When the Intrepid people handed her to the Hudson River Park Trust, they took off the makeshift gun that they had installed. It is our intent to track down where the original gun went and possibly try to get it back. Bill Doherty
