I would think it would be the individual making a statement after getting 3 or more wounds whether or not he thought he could go back into action. It would also depend on the wound or its severity as to whether or not that person could function in another combat situation.

Unhappy Gun shy

Dude, you hurt my feelings! After three purple hearts a guy was gun shy and not worth a damn. Gosh, I thought we were friends. There is another response to getting wounded. Getting pissed, having an attitude and wanting to get even. Oh yeah being young and stupid helps a lot.

25th Division usually did not require a man to go back to the field after two hearts but the key word was ?require?. If you wanted to go back in the field, no problem, same thing with three hearts.

Lt., I never wanted a PH, I didn?t see myself as being reckless they just came my way. At night someone throws a grenade or while advancing on a hedge row an RPG comes out, what do you do? But at the squad or platoon level, never thought an order was moral (under fire) unless the order was, follow me. Feeling guilty about leaving your guys, yeah sure can relate to that one. Feeling guilty when some else who got messed up or dead, guess we still carry that one.

By the way, I think that if you have 4 PH?s you wear the ribbon and 3 clusters, if you got hit 5 times it?s the ribbon and a star, 6 would be a star and a cluster and so on. Sort of like Roman numerals.

Hey Rigger, who received the most PHs?

Stay healthy,
Andy

Default I, TOO

knew people with 3 or more, but they usually accumilated after extensions or multiple tours. In the 101st 3 was the magic number to get you out of the bush. Of coarse, this depended upon the severity. Sometimes it only takes one good one. If you REAALLLY wanted to stay out there, I'm sure they would have let you. I just don't recall it coming up, that I saw.

The guy that I mentioned had been hit with a couple of pieces of shrapnel from a booby trap that someone else tripped. No big deal. A couple of weeks later he has part of a fin of a B-40 sticking out of his bicep. The following month he's shot in the thigh. He figured they were zeroing in on him, so he took the out. That was okay. Some of us were getting nervous being in his general vicinity .

ANDY: I was speaking in general terms. I know that some people need to be hit with a bat just to get their attention .

Default So far...

...I have found nothing higher than Larry's post of Col. Hackworth's PH with seven clusters.

It might be in Guinness. Does anyone have a Guinness Book of World Records?
