Rev -
Not sure just why that was, but never had any dealings with Reservists at all... and our butterbars (what few came along for the right seat) were suitably humble as I recall, at least on the flightline. I got 30 days in "Corrective Custody" for being 2 days late coming home on a weekend (don't ask me to explain how I managed to think I could actually DO so, but maybe age 18 is a fair enough answer ... anyhow, as you may recall, CC is a situation where you sleep in the stockade, and do your job during daylight hours. One day, walking the base on my way to the line I came across a two young kids crying their eyes out and yelling for help... their little black puppy had just been hit by some a-hole airman who didn't even stop to see what he'd hit. I picked up the little critter, and tried to save his life, did whatever first aid I could, tried to calm the kids down, and sent them running for home. Pretty soon an AP pulled up and took the puppy to the infirmary, and went on my way (was late, got chewed out, again). Two days later, an icebar had gone to my sarge and commended my act... which was not necessary, but it was nice of him. Didn't get me 15 seconds off the 30 days, but it felt better |

A young Ensign
This is passed along from a Chief I know:
Subject: A young Ensign Now for all of the Sillyvilians that are on a wonder as to what an Ensign is, well it is a Baby Naval Officer, Green, Wet behind the ears and in most cases a real pain in the ass for a Chief to have to deal with..... A young Ensign had nearly completed his first overseas tour of sea duty when he was given an opportunity to display his ability at getting the ship under way. With a stream of crisp commands, he had the decks buzzing with men and soon, the ship had left port and was streaming out of the channel. The ensign's efficiency has been remarkable. In fact, the deck was abuzz with talk that he had set a new record for getting a destroyer under way. The ensign glowed at his accomplishment and was not all surprised when another seaman approached him with a message from the captain. He was, however, a bit surprised to find that it was a radio message, and he was even more surprised when he read, "My personal congratulations upon completing your underway preparation exercise according to the book and with amazing speed. In your haste, however, you have overlooked one of the unwritten rules -- make sure the fucking captain is aboard before getting under way."

Sparrow....
Does that mean that The Ensign at that point became The New and Honorary Captain (or not?)? Not familiar with: "Anchor Cranker" Chain of Command.

More than likely he was the OOD (Officer of the Deck or Day), and would be relieved. I'd bet the XO would take command in this case. The Skipper could be charged under the UCJM with missing movement..
