'Smatter of fact, I'd be willing and able to serve as a bona fide instructor - strictly for OJT - for any Jarhead or Squid that would like to volunteer for a scenic cruise in the south Indian Ocean! Between a Rigger and an ol' Grunt, we could have a ball.

Ol' T.R. would go along if he could!
Hell, that would be right up his alley! I can see him now, shootin' at pirates with his 1895 Winchester or maybe a 30-40 Krag. He'd squeeze off a shot, lower his rifle and check his target, look at us and grin and say, "Bully!".

On a modern USN Frigate I could find the 5 inch mount easily enough, no great shakes, but beyond that, I would be a stranger in a strange land. Like how in the world can there be a unmanned five inch mount shootn the place up without a Gun Captain a hootin n’ hollerin and using naughty language, just doesn’t seem right. Then, how can one lay claim to saltiness without first experiencing blood shot eyes from cordite smoke mixed with stack gas and walking around and wondering why everyone is whispering; speak up Lad, wassa matter you.
Ayup, the five inch mounts are ear killers. They crack n’ slap much harder then the larger bore turret guns, we’re talking major ouch, sure enough. Scamp

OK, I think it's official: Rigger and me hereby enlist for pirate eradication duty, but only if you're the Chief of the Boat or whatever the hell you Squids call the HMFIC for target acquisition and destruction.
Now - where's that rum ration you keep talking about?

He he, Col., the COB is the senior enlisted man on a submarine. On a surface ship that would be the Chief Master at Arms and reports to the duty bad ass Executive Officer, usually an O4 or O5. The title you are looking for is ‘Gun Boss’ or ‘Gunner‘. He the man when the guns speak their speak. Target acquisition and identification was my deal, with that done, the data was turned over to the Gun Boss for appropriate poofing. One Gun Boss I recall absolutely refused to dial in error at the Pacific gun range. So the tow plane would fly by and usually the first shot and the target sock was a gonner, then that Warrant curmudgeon would start walking the rounds up the tow cable. Zikes, that got the plane crew a screechin n’ cussin. Oh well, I suppose he reckoned that forgiveness came easier then permission.
