I am going to the 15th Med reunion in Biloxi the next weekend. We may go early to check out the Gulf coast and Mobile Bay. That's where that Tennessee hillbilly Admiral Farragut said, "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead". Dumbass didn't know they hadn't been invented yet. Don't know our plans yet so we'll see how it goes.

Torpedoes
The Civil War produced Farragut's famous "Damn the torpedoes! Captain Drayton, go ahead! Jouett, full speed!" Of course, he was talking about stationary torpedoes or what would now be called mines.
First American torpedo were floating kegs of gunpowder that were launched upstream of rivers and if they didn't do their job, then they just floated around in the harbours as mines. Spar torpedoes were towed by the submersible ships but did not last long

He Said Torpedoes....
because no Tennesseean has ever said "Damn the Kegs......" It would be a sin.

More usual last words of Tennesseeans: "Hey Buba, watch this!"
