Jerry is correct about defacing coins or currency.

Defacing with intent to defraud is illegal.

Malicious defacing is illegal.

Ornamentation is legal.

Back in the last half of the 1800s it was quite the fad to create "love tokens" with coins (see picture below).

When I was in Jr High School in the 50s the fad was to take a spoon and beat the edge of a silver quarter until it folded over all the way around. Then cut out the center and you had a silver ring.

Perfectly legal.

It is but it isn't, I sent this bill to a friend in the US Secret Service, (Steve) He sent it back with an explination,Part of the Secret Service I counterfit and curency defacing, BUUUUT, he explans that the Secret service doesn't go after small amounts. and this kind defacing is just a individual protest, Spend it.
