My father in law was in New Caledonia when the Americal Division was created. He was in Guadlacanal but the history is confusing. They put units of the Americal in piecemeal to support the 1st Marine Division and he says he was there from the start including the month or so when the Navy abandoned them. Anyway, there are two people he dislikes intensely: Truman for firing MacArthur and Carter for disbanding the Americal Division.

Thumbs up Fred

Ron said it awhile ago but your father . a lot of us who served in VietNam and our children are Living History. Wish I could go back and know what my great Grand father was thinking during battles in the Civil War, and I just got a few copies of letters he wrote to his brother. Its a lot like me , thankful to be alive and a lot amazied . What a place of learning this place has been for my family. Thank you all and esp. Dave and Bern. Johnny and Olivia will read here one day if they want. Don't mean nothing. Did I tell you I was an Opa ?

As soon as I was eligible to wear a different combat patch I got rid of my Americal Patch. Everybody called us "Calley's Commandos".

Default Calley

I want you guys to tell what was wrong with fire bombing Toykio. With bombing Berlin Flat.
I don't agree with what Calley did, but he didn't do anything wrong, as far as war goes. The only thing his troops did was they killed Face-to-face not at 30,000 feet. But then opinions are like ass holes we all have one.

At 30,000 ft everyone is the enemy. If you're not then your classified as collateral damage.

In WW2 the US bombers bombed Tokyo with fire bombs, Killed over 110,000 non combatants. Then there was nagasaki. and heroshema. Berlin, any number of German citys and non-combatants. Italy, we wrecked the country and killed many many non combatants including a very large church sight high on a mountain.

Your right I don't recall us doing that either, I said I didn't agree with what he did. I asked what was the difference between bombing (on purpous) and killing 100,000 non combatents or killing 300 people (or what ever) close up.
Bob answered it I guess, 30,000 feet ok, 30 feet your a murderer. All the people are still dead which ever way you chose, and the people that did the damage have to live with what they did.
Have you every called in arty on a village? Sure you have, and the non combatants were killed. I m sure you can figure the rest out.
