Got a letter in Vietnam from my "church" kicking me out for not sending them money. Was a little busy at the time. The minister lived 3 doors from my mom and dad. Went to school and church with their sons, and played ball with two of them. When I left for the Army, the minister didn't even show up at my parents house, when I was wounded, didn't even show up at my parents house, then kicked me out because I didn't send them money. Soured me to organized religion for quite sometime. The minister that married Deb and I has given me new faith in the church that "excommunicated" me. (yep, a Roman Catholic term and I wasn't Catholic) But, even with that new faith, I find it hard to attend. Years ago I started getting crap in the mail from my old church. I called the minister asking him to take my name off the mailing list, and why was I on it when I had been booted out. My brother, who was in the Navy, got kicked out also. He didn't know what had happened so I explained it. He apologized. I asked him, "how many members have people in the service now and does the church send them cards at Christmas, Easter, or just anytime to let them know they are thought of?" He was honest and said, "I have no idea, but will find out and change this." I said, "Great, but get my name off your list".

Post Ron, Stick, Tom, & Excommunicated Brother Bob:

Stick: there are a lot of good churches out there, I'm so glad you have found one. The vast majority of pastors I've known and have worked with are really good men. Yet there are some real jerks out there just like any other occupation.

Ron: Marketing God is alright if you aren't swindling the congregation and your main concern isn't getting rich at the congregation's expense, and your theology is good and not twisted in order to get more money for your personal use.

Packo Tom: The majority of all pastors I've know are wonderful men / women. We all have our little personality quirks. But to excommunicate a soldier is in really bad taste. One pastor doesn't make a church. My only advice to you is to stay away from the bad influences in life, I understand there may be a few upon Pscyo Mtn. I won't name names but there just might be one from the mid-west, Indiana to be exact. I understand that he has been repossessed by what I'm not sure.

Brother Bob: Confession is good for the soul. Just keep it PG-13 because there are children on this site. You can do a little counseling for me, tell Packo Tom that only "Washington Wine" is truly spiritual wine and acceptable for drinking.

The Church is a beggar telling other beggars where to find food. That is the only reason the Church exists.

A former co-worker, a Roman Catholic, moved to another town and wanted his 3 daughters to attend the local parochial school. The priest explained that since so many other families wanted their kids to go there, it would be difficult for him to find room for them; BUT...(the priest then wrote down a $ amount on a piece of paper) if my friend would donate that amount of money (over and above the normal tuition) he, the priest, would make sure his daughters would get in. He also told my friend he'd have to work at the weekly Bingo game, setting up the hall and cleaning up afterwards.

In most places, that's considered extortion.
