Professor Gates interview on CNN compare his comments and Soledad O'brien's comments that the 911 caller stated there were two black men breaking into the house with actual 911 call in next video.

911 call:

Police radio dispatch on incident:

Sgt Crowley Interview:

Police Report:
There are three pages to the report. The report answers questions of why Officer Crowley called the Havard Universtiy Police to Identify the professor. (the ID Professor Gates gave Officer Crowley was not a drivers license with a street address but Professor Gates Harvard University ID) Why Officer Crowley asked Professor Gates to step outside. And leaves a question in regard to why the witness description given by the witness to Officer Crowley on the scene of the men entering the home conflicts with the witness description of the men entering the home on the 911 tape. I'm not suggesting an intent to mislead on the part of the witness or the police. It is just a conflict that needs to be cleared up.

Default Sgt Crowley's desperate attempt to save the life of Boston Celtic Reggie Lewis

This story was reported by Jonathan Saltzman, John R. Ellement, and Erica Noonan of the Globe Staff. It was written by Saltzman.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/07/23/officer_at_eye_of_storm_says_he_wont_apologize/

When Sergeant James M. Crowley climbed the front steps of Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s house last week and unexpectedly placed himself in international headlines, it was not the first time he had a memorable encounter in the line of duty with a prominent black man. Nearly 16 years ago, as a Brandeis University police officer, Crowley desperately tried to save the life of Reggie Lewis after the Boston Celtics star collapsed while practicing in the school gym.

“It bothers him terribly that he couldn’t save him,’’ Crowley’s 74-year-old mother, Verina Crowley, said yesterday, speaking of her son and the famous basketball player.

Yesterday, as President Obama condemned the Cambridge Police Department during a prime-time White House news conference and Crowley steadfastly refused to issue the apology that Gates has sought, a fuller picture began to emerge of the 42-year-old sergeant who arrested the Harvard scholar last week on a charge of disorderly conduct on the porch of Gates’s Cambridge house.

Crowley was a certified emergency medical technician when he performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Lewis, to no avail, after the player’s heart stopped on July 27, 1993. In a Globe interview later that day, Crowley said he rushed to the university’s Shapiro Gymnasium, confirmed that Lewis had no pulse, and frantically tried to revive him. “I just kept on going,’’ he said. “I just kept thinking, ‘Don’t let him die - just don’t die.’ ’’

Now, 16 years later, he stands accused of racism by Gates, one of the foremost scholars on race in America. Gates had just arrived home to his Cambridge house from a trip abroad to find his front door stuck shut. As he and the driver who brought him from the airport tried to push it open, a passerby called police with a report of a possible break-in. Crowley arrived and demanded that Gates, now inside, show him identification. Crowley’s police report said Gates behaved belligerently when he questioned him, which Gates denied. Authorities dropped the charge Tuesday after it ignited accusations of racism.

But people who know Crowley were skeptical or outright dismissive of allegations of racism. A prominent defense lawyer, a neighbor of Crowley’s, his union, and fellow officers described him yesterday as a respected, and respectful, officer who performs his job well and has led his colleagues in diversity training.

“He’s evenhanded and, in the cases I’ve had with him, he’s been very much in control and very professional,’’ said Joseph W. Monahan III, a criminal defense lawyer in Cambridge and former Middlesex County prosecutor. Monahan has represented several defendants arrested by Crowley for domestic assaults and for drunken driving.

Crowley himself, speaking to the Globe yesterday and again last night in Natick, said he will not apologize and asserted, “I am not a racist.’’
Crowley’s police union issued a statement saying it had reviewed the arrest of Gates and expressed “full and unqualified support’’ for his actions.

“Sergeant Crowley is a highly respected veteran supervisor with a distinguished record in the Cambridge Police Department,’’ said the Cambridge Police Superior Officers Association. “His actions at the scene of this matter were consistent with his training, with the informed policies and practices of the Department, and with applicable legal standards.’’

The city’s Police Review and Advisory Board, which is independent of the Police Department, has set a meeting July 29 to decide whether to launch a formal inquiry into the incident, according to board investigator Joseph Johnson. He said Gates had not filed a complaint with the board and that no one has filed a complaint against Crowley in the last 12 months.

Crowley, during one of the interviews outside his South Natick home, said he was not authorized to discuss the controversy.

“As much as I’d like to respond, I really can’t,’’ said the married father of three, who coaches youth basketball and plays on a local softball team.

His neighbor Ed Shagory, a retired lawyer, was less reticent. He said he has been friends with Crowley for more than 17 years, and “I think the world of him and his family.’’

Shagory said he was upset by the criticism leveled against the officer and questioned Gates’s statement that the confrontation had inspired the Harvard professor to consider making a documentary about racial profiling. “I think the idea of him already planning a documentary is very premature, and a very unnecessary thing to say before all the facts are even in,’’ Shagory said.

Crowley joined Cambridge police around 1998, according to Sergeant James DeFrancesco, an aide to police Commissioner Robert C. Haas, who was unavailable for comment.

Verina Crowley said James is the third of her four sons, all in law enforcement. Two brothers, Jack and Joseph, also work for the Cambridge police. The fourth, Daniel, is a Middlesex County deputy sheriff.

Verina Crowley said her sons were raised mostly in the Fresh Pond neighborhood where she still lives, attended racially diverse Cambridge public schools, and graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, where she worked for 26 years.

“He is not a racist,’’ she said in the hallway of her home. And Gates “is not the first black person he ever met in his life.’’

Her children, she said, had black friends over to their home while growing up. James Crowley is still friends with one of those youngsters, now a Cambridge firefighter, she said.

“They grew up with black kids, white kids, kids who didn’t have parents, kids who had two parents - everything you can think of,’’ she recalled. Tolerance “wasn’t something you taught,’’ she said. “You just lived it.’’ Her son, she said, remains haunted by the events of that summer day, nearly 16 years ago, when as a Brandeis police officer he was dispatched to the college gym to help an unconscious man - who turned out to be Lewis.

After confirming that the Celtics guard had no pulse, Crowley and another officer began performing CPR, according to an account in the Globe. “My immediate indication was that I thought he was dead,’’ Crowley said at the time. An ambulance arrived and took Lewis to Waltham-Weston Hospital, but he could not be revived.

Yesterday, more than a dozen Cambridge police officers working at Harvard and Central squares declined to comment for attribution about the controversy.

But several officers, all of them white, described Crowley as a well-liked officer, and one dismissed the allegations of racism.

That officer, who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters, said, “Racism is not part of it, and that is what is frustrating. The fact that the Police Department dropped the charges makes the police officer look like he is wrong.’’

Default Arrow,...

Since apparently more knowlegeable than most about this obvious Public Duplicity and/or The Gates/Obama Contrived Racism Exploitation Combo,...answer me this. Do you think the unarguably quite different of character than Gates or Obama and/or basically a: "Duty, Honor, Country" type like Sgt. Crowley,...should even consider: "Having a beer" with his insulting demeaners & defamers?

I DON'T(!),...since honestly believing that doing so falsely increases the believability of such notables of Greatly Suspect Character & Obvious Race Supremacists, at best. Plus, such can never serve any good whatsoever for Crowley & all rest of Good American People. For Race Supremacist Controlling Ploys,...of course.

Besides & in general, I never believe that ANYONE should ever: "Stupidly" go The Obama Route and/or panderingly kiss-up-to or make nicey-nicey with obvious enemies whom known not wishing US (both ways) or ANY: "UN-Connected" American Citizens WELL. Whereas, friends, supporters, perpetual beholders, cronies & collaborators,...of course are always wished WELL & FAIR WELL.

Hell, even MANY MILLIONS of (forget that 30 year old low guesstimate of 12.5 Million) Criminally Illegal Aliens will fair better under Obama Crowd Dictates. Those: "Bail-outs" always PUNISHING The American Citizen/Taxpayer ARE SOLELY GREAT for American & Foreign National "Fat Cats" , whether in government or corporate hierarchies.

All: "Fat Cats" are no doubt fairing infinitely much better nowadays,...what with King Obama & Queen Nancy Pelosi now in Total Control of MY/YOUR/OUR Monies. ALSO coming across: "Holier than thou" Rob* (Ironic isn't it?) Emanuel,...ALSO no doubt helps plea$e all: "Fat Cat$", "Czar$ & new bureaucracie$, and minions of others (even U.S. Citizens) at The Public Troth.

Sure hope such doesn't soon dry-up?

Neil

P.S. Yeah, I know that Emanuel's first name isn't actually: "Rob".
Thought that the monicker just better explains him & his White House function.
Sure, I could have just as easily taken the H out RAHM for describing him just as well.
But,...I just didn't.

Default Thanks, Sis

That ought to nail down all the details and settle all the contention.

Default Friends & Fellow Patriots,...

Along the same lines of this latest Purposefully Contrived Racial Matters, was truly quite glad hearing on FNC and/or Fox News Channel (Where else?) this morning that Sgt. Crowley will be legally represented during: "The Beer Fest" at White House,...with obviously both lifelong & to date & quite masterful; "Race Card Players" Gates & Obama.

Yeah, that's right unargually: "Good Cop" Crowley.
Even when partying with such obviously ALWAYS Agenda Purposefully Promoting Phonies, it's truly wise to....JUST WATCH YOUR BACK (Front, Top & Bottom or butt also)!!!

One just never truly knows how such will twist or pervert even the most innocent or friendliest of meetings,...SOLELY to "THEIR" & Clique's Advantage? Besides, hasn't such as I allude to been proved over & over,...by both Career-Word Perverters Gates & Obama?

So then, just Stay Vigilant Oh Quite Differently: "Protector of The People" One or type.
The unarguable truth of the matter being that We Americans actually need MORE of You & like & MUCH LESS of: "THEM" & like,...for-a-"CHANGE".

Sgt Crowley's cool under fire and intelligence reminds me of Andy. Sgt Crowley did the right thing in going to the White House meeting with Professor Gates and the President. Sgt Crowley was willing to talk but stood his ground. I appreciate that both Sgt Crowley and Professor Gates are willing to continue their conversation in the future. Their willingness to press forward and communicate in a calm manner while agreeing to disagree on the event that brought them to this point is an example to all of us living in these tumultuous times.

For SGT Crowley and the prof to agree to disagree is one thing, maybe even positive. However, his failure - insofar as we know - to acknowledge his part in this entire brouhaha still represents the self-righteousness as I suspect. An even greater absence was an apology on the part of B.O., who was the major culprit in making a racist remark. He is so unpresidential that it boggles my mind. And remember, a mind is a terrible thing to boggle.

I stand by my first post and agree the President owes Sgt Crowley and law enforcement an apology as does Proferssor Gates. Sgt Crowley and the Cambridge Police department have taken the high ground in taking this discussion out of the public eye and away from the media to a private venue without compromising their stand. If the President and Professor the media and the rest of us want a "teachable moment" in my humble opinion they might look to that first press conference the Cambridge Police department held after the President's remarks at his press conference where he stated the police acted stupidly and then recounted the history of racial profiling in the USA after admitting he did not know the facts of the incident. The Cambridge Police Department press conference following those remarks by the President brings together men and women from the black, latino, and white communities standing united in support of Officer Crowley because what matters to them was not the color of his skin but his character and his performance on the job.

Obama's revealing body language (updated and expanded))

Thomas Lifson
This picture truly is worth at least a thousand words.

I am stunned that the official White House Blog published this picture and that it is in the public domain. The body language is most revealing.

Sergeant Crowley, the sole class act in this trio, helps the handicapped Professor Gates down the stairs, while Barack Obama, heedless of the infirmities of his friend and fellow victim of self-defined racial profiling, strides ahead on his own. So who is compassionate? And who is so self-involved and arrogant that he is oblivious?

In my own dealings with the wealthy and powerful, I have always found that the way to quickly capture the moral essence of a person is to watch how they treat those who are less powerful. Do they understand that the others are also human beings with feelings? Especially when they think nobody is looking.

Hat tip: Rick Richman

Update from Thomas Lifson:

I think this photo constitutes another major Obama blunder.

As some AT commentators point out, this picture becomes a metaphor for ObamaCare. The elderly are left in the back, with only the kindness of the Crowleys of the world, the stand up guys, to depend on. The government has other priorities.

One of the major subtexts of the health care debate involves the public's fear of indifferent, powerful bureaucrats ruling their lives. It is one thing to wait in line at the DMV to find out which other line you should wait in, in order to begin the process of waiting for multiple bureaucrats to go through the motions of processing your request. I have spent entire afternoons going through this process.

But when we get to health care, waiting often means enduring pain and dysfunction longer than necessary, sometimes a worsening of the condition, and sometimes death.

That's why I think this image will have genuine resonance. It captures something that older Americans in particular can relate to. The President presses ahead with a program that will tell them to take painkillers instead of getting that artificial hip.

At every stage of the entire Gates affair, Obama has provided a revealing tell. The "acted stupidly" blunder revealed that he automatically blames the police and thinks they really are stupid to begin with. It didn't trigger a single alarm bell in his mind as he figured out what to say.

Then, the non-apology apology revealed an arrogant man who cannot do what honest people do: admit it when they make a mistake.

Now at stage three, the beer photo op looked OK. It didn't turn into a disaster.

But then in a small moment that nobody in the White House had the brains to understand, Obama goes and send a body language message like this.

I think he is going to get deeper and deeper into trouble. He is no longer repeating the familiar scripts dreamed up for the campaign. He was a master performer.

But when he goes improv, as a president must do, he lets his true character show. This helps widen the level of doubt that Obama is the same guy a majority voted for. Those doubts can only grow.

Andrew McCarthy has assembled an overwhelming case that Obama has lied about who he is. I predict that more and more Americans will become open to the argument that they have been had by a sophisticated and ruthless effort to foist a phony on America.

Update from Clarice Feldman

A nice comparison of the character of the two most recent presidents. George Bush with Senator Robert Byrd:

Default Darrel,...

Thank You Very Much for passing along both photo & literal proof that Bush & Crowley were/are both ClASS ACTS,...whereas El Grande, El Supremo and/or: "Dem Messiah" "His Barackness" & many other: "Democrat/Socialist/Leftist Political Supremacist Marxists posing as Liberals" herd leaders like Prof. Gates,...most definitely ARE NOT & WILL NEVER BE!

Such just not (nor ever is) in their exceptionally lordly and/or: "Holier than thou" genes.
