We drove out to the Cliff House today at Ocean Beach. It was overcast with high fog, but was a comfortable temperature. There were sunnier places to be in The City, so the beach wasn't very crowded.

There were some decent waves and a few surfers braving the cold water. As a teenager, I spent alot of days at this beach surfing, body surfing, and trying to warm up next to a campfire. The fires are prohibited now. Ocean Beach can have some very dangereous rip tides, and claims a couple of lives a year.

Just below the Cliff House to the north, are the foundations and pools of the old Sutro Baths. These were various pools of different sizes and temperatures indoors and out. They were a popular recreation spot for San Franciscans from the turn of the century to up into the '40's. They were built by millionaire philanthropist, and one time mayor of San Francisco, Adolf Sutro. Sutro was a German engineer who made a fortune by designing the Sutro Tunnel. This was a drainage system that he invented to drain away the hot water that constantly flooded the silver mines of Virginia City, NV.

Another famous landmark at Ocean Beach are Seal Rocks, just below the Cliff House. If you ever dine at the Cliff House, get a window table.

You will definately get to see hundreds of sea birds, including gulls, cormorants, and pelicans; and certain times of the year, sea lions.
