Smile I'll probably regret telling this story.......................

But what the heck. A week or two after I reported on board the Cutter Tamaroa in October of 1967, I was walking toward the bow on the starboard side. As I was heading forward weighed down by an arm load of gear, I passed the Gunny, Gunner's Mate 1/c Brogan. I greeted him and he responded "good morning sunshine", well I nearly had a fit. I mean listen, when you get a nick name, at least it means you have been accepted by the crew, but Sunshine??? Egads!!! At any rate, I asked him why did he call me that. His reply was that everytime he saw me, I was smiling.

Not exactly a great nickname on a salvage tug that looked like a rough and tumble home, but hey, it worked :-)

Default Worthless

Worthless--well, it comes with the name, I guess. It was like the Boy named Sue, I spose
"Well I grew up fast and I grew up mean
My fists got hard and my wits got keen
Roamed from town to town to hide my shame."
it kept me on my toes--people don't usually call me that twice but there's always someone coming up with the bright idea "Hey!! Do they ever call your Worthless?" I give them my most drop dead stare which is hard to do on the net.
But Ive gotten to like it over the years, there's a long string of pirates and highway robbers named Worth most of whom came to a bad end. The most famous Worth, the one Ft Worth was named after was a real a$$hole according to US Grant who was his ADC in the Mexican War.
My first roomate after the Army called me James and it stuck, Never been Jim after that.

James Worth

Happy Just To Be alive

PS The women who know me well call me Tripod
