![]() Correct Ron,
That ATC has to be feeling mighty, mighty bad and low. But when a person is put in the position to be multi-tasking n? spread too thin, then I?d be inclined start asking question above and beyond the obvious and widen the search for culpability. The FAA regs state that the person attending to air field ops can?t be the same person attending to the radar display n? air commo. Kind of like an USN Aircraft Carrier, I highly doubt the Air Boss hauls buns down to the flight and hanger decks to keep things sorted out. Ay no, I?m no Carrier Sailor, not by a long shot, but do know how the Air Rates were organized. Alas, when a plane was on the flight or hanger deck, the Aviation Boatswain?s Mates ruled. Once up, the Air Boss and connected Aviation Rates ruled, and that included the Navy version of an ATC. When we ran forward ?Plane Guard?; usually 150-200 miles ahead of the Carrier, we had what was called ?upper air bank? and that was three consoles of radar display and there were ATC qualified Sailors that took over from the carrier ATC?s and vectored the strike jets into North Vietnam targets, watched the air activity, turned the perp Migs n? Yaks over to Weps Dept. for poofing, and that was done about 10-15 miles off the NVN coast, about due east of Hai Phong. Picked up some USN Pilots out of the briny blue as well, happy guys for sure. I'm drifting, eh. Sorry about that. Scamp

![]() Hears a good one,
The ground crew directed the flight crew to the wrong plane, The flight crew fired up the engines and generators and were finally told they were in the wrong aircraft. This airport seems to have enough incompedent people for several airports. Ive watched aircraft carrior operations on TV and them guys know exactly how its done. Ron |

I've worked a flight deck for many years and yes the Navy is very competent. Last night I heard that the controller will have his share of grief over this mishap. I suspect at least two controllers will be assigned at all times now. One to watch aircraft take off and the other to monitor other traffic. This loss is terrible but some good will come from it. Once more this is no comfort to the familes of those killed in the crash. I'm sure more details will come out at the co-pilot makes his statements.

Good things comming from a tragity is good and bad. We always wait until seveal people die before we put up a street light at a intersection, I guess thats because we, as a people, don't want to be regulated, even for our own good. It the airports case, there was a controler there, he just wasn't doing his job, his #1 priority was the people on that plane, even if someone told him to go do something else. Comunication is the factor in a lot of accidents, or rather the lack of communication. Ron |
