![]() Yankee buddy, Neil.
Do you know just how ridiculously ignorant you sound? Reducing the defense budget began under President Reagan's second term, and then gathered steam under the first President Bush's administration. It was President GHW Bush's secretary of defense, Dick Cheney, who even targeted MORE areas of the military that should be cut. There were also bipartisan committees which cut military bases because we didn't need them. The Cold War was over. The USSR was no more. The US had no other major enemies in the world. Both the democrats and republicans in congress were under great pressure from Americans to cut the massive military spending because they were unneeded and our taxes could be put to better use. Although republicans have never seen a weapon they didn't like, they still ADVOCATED, PUSHED FOR, AND APPROVED the cuts in defense, under President Clinton. 709,000 REGULAR (ACTIVE DUTY) PERSONNEL (cut by republican-controlled congress) 293,000 RESERVE TROOPS (cut by republican-controlled congress) EIGHT STANDING ARMY DIVISIONS (cut by republican-controlled congress) 20 AIR FORCE AND NAVY AIR WINGS WITH 2,000 COMBAT AIRCRAFT (cut by republican-controlled congress) 232 STRATEGIC BOMBERS (cut by republican-controlled congress) 19 STRATEGIC BALLISTIC MISSILE SUBMARINES WITH 3,114 NUCLEAR WARHEADS AND 232 MISSILES (cut by republican-controlled congress) 500 ICBMs WITH 1,950 WARHEADS (cut by republican-controlled congress) FOUR AIRCRAFT CARRIERS AND 121 SURFACE COMBAT SHIPS AND SUBMARINES (cut by republican-controlled congress) PLUS ALL THE SUPPORT BASES, SHIPYARDS, AND LOGISTICAL ASSETS NEEDED TO SUSTAIN SUCH A NAVAL FORCE (cut by republican-controlled congress) Republicans will continue to use propaganda to try to blame the democratic party, or democratic candidates, of voting against defense spending. But with regard to cutting the defense during the Clinton years, republicans are blaming CLINTON for something they did. The republican party under President Clinton is responsible for eliminating all of the above listed weapons. Blame the democrats? Hardly. Any "blame" is firmly sitting on the republican's laps. But they are too dishonest to admit it. Lastly, there are two huge exceptions to the republican defense cutting under President Clinton. When Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House, he managed to get more tax dollars poured into his district than any other congressional district in the entire country----EVER!. Representative Gingrich managed to slip in an additional billion dollars worth of pork in a defense bill to build aircraft that the Pentagon did not want, did not need, and could not maintain. And the Pentagon didn't even request the aircraft. It was a classic case of pork gathering by republican representative Gingrich. And when Mississippi's Senator Trent Lott was the Republican Senate Majority Leader under President Clinton, he succeeded in getting a billion dollar contract slipped into a defense bill to build an aircraft carrier in his state. Again, the Pentagon did not want, did not need, and could not maintain the aircraft carrier. And the Pentagon didn't even request the aircraft carrier. Republican Trent Lott's state had more pork spending than any other state in the country. And if that wasn't bad enough, Trent Lott tried to bail out one of his biggest Mississippi campaign contributors using taxpayer money. This contributor owned a chicken processing company that made a bad business deal with a Russian company. The company lost 350 million dollars. Trent Lott tried to sneak in a provision into a bill that would have bailed out that business with 350 million dollars of our hard-earned money. At the last moment, Trent Lott's scheme was found out and he was forced to pull that portion of the bill out the night before it was going to be voted on. If you own a business and make a bad business decision would you expect the government to bail you out? Well, if you gave enough money to corrupt politicians like Trent Lott you could expect to be rewarded for your support. The republican party touts itself as being the party of "fiscal responsibility" but they are far from it. Their party members appear clueless to reality, because under Clinton, Senator Trent Lott and Representative Newt Gingrich were the two biggest pork gatherers in our government's history. So then, if you're looking for BLAME for "cutting" defense spending------------if you're HONEST???--------------You MUST include the republican controlled Congress during the Clinton years, AND Dick Cheney as the first Bushs' Secretary of Defense in the early 1990s', and ironically even Ronald Reagen! These F-A-C-T-S are undisputed and in the PUBLIC RECORD!

![]() I don't think a politican one supports our troops. I think with this bkickering about funding the war with a pull out is no that using our men and women in uniform as polictical pawns for their own beneftis wether it be the Executive Office or the Congress.
