I asked one of the Outhouse Saloon
Regulars to take the test, He is so southern he talks slower than cold molassas pours. He complained that the test was unfair because it was all words and didn't have any pictures.

Now why is Yankee a bad name?
It was what the French called the English settlers in this region...L'Englaise and the Native Americans turned it into Yanglees. Over the years Yanglees became Yankees. But then I'm not a big baseball fan so I guess I wouldn't really understand the depth of the rivalry.

Dragon Lady,
Here's another variation of the origin of "Yankee". When England took over the Dutch colonies in New Amsterdam (soon to be called New York), they derisively called the Dutch who stayed there, "Jan Kees". "Jan" (pronounced "yawn") being Dutch for John and "Kees" is Dutch for cheese, so the Dutch were referred to as "John Keyes" which was eventually shortened to "Yankees".

Thanks Dan,
That's one I hadn't heard. You would think with all of the Dutch heritage around here (Patroon Van Rensselaer, Voorheesville, Defreesville) I would have heard of that one. We'll have to take a little trip back across the Mass/NY line again this summer and you could "instruct" us on more Colonial history. That would be great fun! Heck you're less that a few hours drive from here. DL

Dragon Lady & Dan
If you'd like to meet somewhere that might get you in the mood for colonial history may I suggest Old Sturbridge Village, it's just off of interstate 90 and very interesting.
There is also Old South Deerfield, Rt. #90, North an Rt. #91 and your there. Deerfield is about the great massacre by the Inidans that took place there in May of 1704. They will be doing some special stuff there this May. I could meet both of you, if you'd like. Stay healthy, Andy PS: I've heard both versions of the origin of Yankee. Today it just means The Evil Empire. |
