‘It Failed Miserably’: After Wargaming Loss, Joint Chiefs Are Overhauling How the US Military Will Fight
By: Tara Copp - Defense One News - 07-27-21
Re: https://www.defenseone.com/policy/20...-fight/184050/

In a fake battle for Taiwan, U.S. forces lost network access almost immediately. Hyten has issued four directives to help change that.

A brutal loss in a wargaming exercise last October convinced the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. John Hyten to scrap the joint warfighting concept that had guided U.S. military operations for decades.

“Without overstating the issue, it failed miserably. An aggressive red team that had been studying the United States for the last 20 years just ran rings around us. They knew exactly what we're going to do before we did it,” Hyten told an audience Monday at the launch of the Emerging Technologies Institute, an effort by the National Defense Industrial Association industry group to speed military modernization.

The Pentagon would not provide the name of the wargame, which was classified, but a defense official said one of the scenarios revolved around a battle for Taiwan. One key lesson: gathering ships, aircraft, and other forces to concentrate and reinforce each other’s combat power also made them sitting ducks.

“We always aggregate to fight, and aggregate to survive. But in today’s world, with hypersonic missiles, with significant long-range fires coming at us from all domains, if you're aggregated and everybody knows where you are, you're vulnerable,” Hyten said.

Even more critically, the blue team lost access to its networks almost immediately.

“We basically attempted an information-dominance structure, where information was ubiquitous to our forces. Just like it was in the first Gulf War, just like it has been for the last 20 years, just like everybody in the world, including China and Russia, have watched us do for the last 30 years,” Hyten said. “Well, what happens if right from the beginning that information is not available? And that’s the big problem that we faced.”

In response, the Joint Chiefs have since October been shifting the U.S. military to a new concept of warfighting operations they call “Expanded Maneuver.” Hyten wants the U.S. military to be ready to fight under the new operating concept by 2030, using many of today’s weapons, aircraft, and ships.

Personal note: Invasion will be tough on the locals - it always is - in every conflict or war.
Today's big guns and bombs will no doubt be considered and the loss of civvies is inevitable.
No matter who we fight - on whatever land mass - its the civvies that really get the worst of it.
There's no such thing as a clean war! The current landlords of those lands have to realize and
express this to their people that there is a price to pay for freedom.
-
War's degrade the purpose for which they were started - its the People who pay the price for
their ruler's decision's - supposedly in their behalf. Once it starts the end could be quick or
suffered over several years. It's like a world gone mad and it happens day & night for very
long periods in the beginning. You have two choice's in the beginning - give up without a
fight (of which could still result in loss of civvies by the captor's). It's a no win scenario for
the civvies - once it starts they will never forget or forgive those who brought this situation
to their lands. And it will go on for generations (always asking - Who Do I Trust?).

Exclamation War Games Revealed US Military Vulnerabilities: Joint Chiefs Vice Chair

War Games Revealed US Military Vulnerabilities: Joint Chiefs Vice Chair
By: Hercules Reyes - The Defense Post News - 07-28-21
Re: https://www.thedefensepost.com/2021/...lnerabilities/

The US military was beaten in a classified war game last year, exposing several troubling vulnerabilities, Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. John Earl Hyten revealed on Monday.

The war game involved several scenarios and simulations, including one modeling a battle for Taiwan, which US forces ended up losing.

One of the main problems discovered during the simulated engagement was a communications vulnerability. The blue team, playing the role of local forces, lost network access almost immediately, putting them at a severe disadvantage.

‘It Failed Miserably’
---------------------

“Without overstating the issue, it failed miserably,” Gen. Hyten said earlier this week during a launch event for the National Defense Industrial Association’s Emerging Technologies Institute. “An aggressive red team that had been studying the United States for the last 20 years just ran rings around us. They knew exactly what we’re going to do before we did it.”

Hyten also remarked that with the United States’ known “information dominance” beginning with the first Gulf War and its worldwide reputation, the immediate loss of communication in a critical situation caused great concern.

“Well, what happens if right from the beginning that information is not available?” the general asked rhetorically. “And that’s the big problem that we faced.”

In response, the Joint Chiefs have formulated a new warfighting operations concept referred to as “Expanded Maneuver.” Hyten is looking for the US military to be educated, trained, and ready to operate according to the new strategy by 2030.

Personal note: Hey Guy's you really think you got to 2030 to correct the issues at hand!?
-
You should be 3-5 years ahead of our foes - if anything. And now you want 9-Years to fix the issues! Give us a break!
-
Ah - I hate to say this but you're already 10 years behind the issues at hand - and what makes you think you got nine
years to fix the current and future problems?
-
Where is the foresight of our Military Leader's who are supposed to be providing the welfare of our People & Country?
I'd be ashamed to post something like this - it causes insecurity - and our troops have to wonder what their leaders
have been doing the last 10 years?
-
So! you may have two years at most before all hell breaks loose and then the ass kicking comes into play.
All of the monies spent on military issues and you're telling us you need another nine - years to resolved the issues
- my God that is blow to my gut! You're supposed to be looking forward - not backwards - on our countries place
in the world.
-
This report should never have been posted - its depressing and someone needs to be held accountable for this backlog
of insignificance in our military preparedness. You guys are blowing our monies for weapons and fighting other countries
battles - but here in America today you say you need nine more years to fix the issues. That's B.S. Someone must be held
accountable for this finding. Of course you will need more funding to fix the issues - but after nine years - then what?
By that time - you may have most likely fallen behind another five or more years - to modernized & upgrade.
It's a little un-nerving to read reports like this.
-
As one of my old boss's used to say to me once - he'd say "you better get your Duck's in Row
- I'd say that applies to the US Defense Dept. in the USA as well.
