Just a thought
What if the separation of church and state was to avoid the problem that the Americans saw in England. To have a gov't office or serve as an officer in the military, you had to belong to the Church of England. Every English citizen had to paid a church tax to support the Church of England, even if you were a follower of something else: Jewish, Catholic, or Calvinist. This way a person can judged on merit of action, not because they were of the "right" religion. Watch some of these TV preachers talk about their denomination is the only "true" one. Constitution basically states everybody has free choice. "Choose wisely grasshopper."
