Cool Stalin, in Virginia

Of course, it’s customary at year’s end to share our favorite news items from the year past. As someone who teaches and writes about history, I tend to focus on historical things I fear are lost to American education.
So, my enduring “news item” of 2010 falls under the category of historical outrage, though it is redeemed somewhat by another item considerably more positive. I’d like to link them here as a teachable moment.

My outrage of 2010: the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va., erected a statue of Joseph Stalin, architect of the Great Purge, Ukrainian famine, gulag, war on religion, and countless millions of deaths. We learned about this travesty thanks to the vigilance of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, which created a website (www.stalinstatue.com) to call attention to this moral-historical obscenity. The site features a petition, with thousands of signatures from around the world. Addressed to the National D-Day Memorial Foundation and President Obama’s interior secretary, it demanded that the “true history of World War II must be protected from distortion and misinformation.”

Among the distortion and misinformation, as noted by the petition: “neither Joseph Stalin nor Soviet forces played any part in the D-Day landing at Normandy.”

Worse, it was Stalin, via the August 1939 Hitler-Stalin “Non-Aggression” Pact, who helped launch World War II in the first place, ultimately leading to D-Day—i.e., the horrible deaths suffered by all those American boys on those beaches in France.

Ironically, such disinformation was once the crass domain of Kremlin propagandists, of Stalin’s in-house stooges. That this absurdity would happen in America today, by educators, is breathtaking. Well, it happened in 2010.

My sources tell me that the Stalin statue has since been removed, though reportedly as part of a compromise merely to move it to another exhibit. They fear it hasn’t gone away for good. Without a stake in the chest in a sealed coffin stuffed with garlic, they dread that Stalin could rise again in Bedford, especially if we don’t stand vigilant with torches and crosses.

I’m not optimistic.

On the plus side, however, 2010 finally shed the light of truth upon one of Stalin’s most heinous acts. The light was cast not by Americans in Bedford but, ironically, by Russians in Moscow. It was a long-overdue moment of justice concerning the Katyn Woods massacre.

The slaughter at Katyn was one of the worst war crimes of the bloody 20th century, rooted in that pact between Hitler and Stalin, who in September 1939 jointly invaded, annihilated, and partitioned Poland. The Soviets seized thousands of Polish military officers as prisoners. The fate of those Poles was secretly sealed on March 5, 1940 when Stalin himself signed their death warrant, condemning 21,857 of them to “the supreme penalty: shooting.”

What happened next remained a state secret for decades. The Polish officers were taken to three primary sites, the most infamous of which bears the name of the crime: the Katyn Woods, located near Smolensk, Russia. There, these unsuspecting men were methodically slaughtered. The Bolsheviks covered their crime with a thin layer of dirt.

Yikes. This is outrageous indeed. What were they thinking? I remember that even in Russian the people are protesting statues of Stalin. Even his hometown of the country Georgia recently decided to remove his statue:

telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/georgia/7854736/Josef-Stalin-statue-removed-from-hometown-in-Georgia.html

So where do you think the "Virginia statue" is now at? Any information?

Also, I agree on what you said about the Katy massacre. You said:

Quote:
The Bolsheviks covered their crime with a thin layer of dirt.
And a layer of claims that the Germans were the perpetrators. Only in the past decade or so has this been officially corrected.

Default Blue....,

Read & reread: "Stalin in Virginia" post, and still couldn't figure out whom actually responsible for: "In-your-face" gall or audacity of quite despicably placing a statue of Stalin at the National D-Day Memorial.

Would truly like hearing any lame excuse for so insulting all brave souls sacrificing life & limb for Liberating Europe. Must be some doozzy?

Granted, "Uncle Joe" or Joseph STALIN (show-biz name & in english means: steel) cowardly killing spree of fellow Russians wasn't near as great as administration revered Chairman Mao's murdering of about 70,000,000 (SEVENTY MILLION) Defenseless: "Anti-government" Chinese People, during peacetime. But, so what.

Regardless, no busts or statues of sicko Nazis, Communists or even Marxists/Progressives should be displayed anywhere near Honorable Brave & Courageous Americans & Allies.

In wax museums? Eh,...maybe so?

Thumbs down Recon...

An opinion as to who is responsible?

I would say the gradual permissiveness we have in tolerating small incremental political/legal steps which have over the decades stealthily driven us closer and closer to realizing the Marxist dialectic at every level of our society - starting with the Department of Education, where "enemies of the State" (aka any constitutional conservative) are daily and openly suppressed.

Default Blue....,

Your answer as to why America is now so politically screwed-up, seems absolutely correct to me.

Still & at first, you really threw me with that word: "Dialectic".
So,...I looked the word up. There were/are 5 variations defining that word.

Preferred definition variation of 3.a., since currently explains why We Americans are steadily loosing our Liberty, Freedom & Sovereignty to alien ideologues, quite well.

WOW!!! "dialectic 3.a.The Marxian process of change through the conflict of opposing forces" sure-as-hell honestly defines Obama, Czars & rest Duplicitous Dem crowd SO NICELY! Doesn't even call such obvious phonies or charlatans: "Charlatans".

Though & further unfortunately for We Americans, is that most deceivers alluded to having obvious Marxist Dictatorial mind-sets, just will never admit being Marxists at all.

Marxist & supportive press typically, concertedly & deceptively laugh & joke about such must figure that if all stick together & lie together,...Americans won't be any the wiser?

Pretty-much-same enlightened echoing by Democrat/Socialist/Marxist/Communist or Progressive cohorts & conspirators in government & press,...daily propagandize that "They" are: "Liberals", INSTEAD. What FURTHER Bull!

Though and in fairness to all such Lefties or Leftist Crowd, they sure must know what they do.

If Dems not always typically standing together: "Thick as thieves", it's not very likely that We Americans would ever have been saddled with: "His Barackness" or King Obama & Band of Community Organizer Brothers (sisters also) ala Kremlin style.

That'll teach you to never make me look up a word, Blue.

Neil

Lightbulb dialadyslexic, like me

Sorry 'bout use of that word, Recon.

It just goes with their dang territory, and it irks me that I'm forced to use it when speaking of them.

It fits though, eh.
