SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen held a memorial service at their base hangar in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, to pay tribute to one of their own as well as to remember the other crewmembers of Coast Guard helicopter 6535, who perished in a crash during a training mission in Mobile Bay Ala., Feb. 28, 2012.

Lt. j.g. Thomas Cameron, a rescue helicopter pilot stationed at Air Station Borinquen, and the other crewmembers of Coast Guard 6535; Lt. Cmdr. Dale Taylor, Chief Petty Officer Fernando Jorge and Petty Officer 3rd Class Andrew Knight were honored during the service.

“To the members of District 7, Sector San Juan, Air Station Borinquen and the Coast Guard Academy Class of 2009, I am proud that we are part of the same service,” said Rear Adm. Bill Baumgartner, 7th Coast Guard District commander. “As we remember and celebrate L.t.j.g Cameron’s life, please know that you are not alone and that the promise of what you will accomplish with your lives and careers will be a large part of Thomas’s legacy and, I’m sure, will serve as an inspiration to his family.”

On Feb. 28, 2012, a Coast Guard helicopter, designation 6535, went down in Mobile Bay, Ala., during a training flight. The bodies of Taylor, Cameron and Jorge were recovered from the crash site within the first few days of the search, and Knight was located March 8.

The ceremony was well attended by Coast Guard service members and partner agencies such as Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Field Operations, Caribbean Air and Marine Branch and Ramey Sector’s Office of Border Patrol, and the Puerto Rico National Guard, who had the opportunity to pay their respects as well.

"So now we move forward, we take a deep breath before we make that first step, for tomorrow, the sun will rise and a new day will begin,” said Capt. Robert D. Phillips, Air Station Borinquen commanding officer. "Perhaps a gale will blow, a boat may flounder and we may not always know what the future holds for us. So we must train, we must hone our skills, we must be Always Ready – we must remain Semper Paratus.”
