Obama Considering Turning off Flame at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for New "Green" Initiative

Peter Richardson
September 10, 2009

"Today we stand at a precipice." Then-Senator Barack Obama told an audience in Racine, Wisconsin last year, "If we are able to reduce carbon emissions and build a sustainable future, our children will benefit for generations."

The future President has stated that environmental policy will be one of the cornerstones of his tenure in the White House. In order to reduce pollution caused by carbon dioxide, President Obama has pushed for various pieces of legislation, including the Cash for Clunkers bill and the so-called Cap and Trade provisions.

Both candidate and President Obama has stated that a paramount goal would be to reduce American need for foreign sources of fuel.

Many of the efforts to reduce energy consumption are well-known to the American people. These include turning off lights when not in a room, insulating buildings, and raising mileage standards for automobiles.

However, one small proviso has many within the Defense Department and in Congress infuriated.

According to two sentences posted on September 8 on the White House website, one initiative included turning off the 'eternal flame' at the Tomb of the Unknowns in the Arlington National Cemetery. The post, which was briefly cited by FoxNews, was then swiftly deleted.

When later asked about this by FoxNews' White House Correspondent Major Garrett during a flight with the President, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs stated that, "We have no comment on this policy at this time."

However, Defense officials have reportedly leaked part of the justification coming from the Administration. According to aides to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the Administration may be implementing its policy for several reasons. One included fuel savings:

"...[with] ordinary Americans facing higher fuel prices, shutting off the Flame will save 20,000 gallons of kerosene a year."

While another passage stated that "two-hundred tons" of carbon emissions would be reduced by shutting off the flame.

In a statement later released by Jen Psaki, White House Deputy Press Secretary, much of the controversy regarding the possible change is overstated. Psaki stated that the flame would still be lit on important dates, such as Independence Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans' Day.

"The President remains committed to making the United States energy independent." the statement said, "This possible policy should remind all Americans of the noble sacrifices by our veterans, and how we can solve the energy crisis with sound planning and each doing our part."

Well,

I'm not a Democrat, so if people want to bash Obama up one side and down the other, it doesn't really matter to me.

But if I were someone who wanted to malign Obama or anyone else, I would do it in a way that does not make me look like a jackass and that appears believeable and credible to most people who read it.

THERE IS NO ETERNAL FLAME AT THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWNS IN ARLINGTON.

The only eternal flames dedicated to unknown soldiers are in Bulgaria, Russia, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, and the Ukraine.

OK, let's put out the flame at JFK's burial site. Bet that gets some Demo's panties in a tight wad!

Default Kennedys could just pay for it

Lighted by Mrs. Kennedy during the funeral, the Eternal Flame burns from the center of a five-foot circular flat-granite stone at the head of the grave. The burner is a specially designed apparatus created by the Institute of Gas Technology of Chicago. A constantly flashing electric spark near the tip of the nozzle relights the gas should the flame be extinguished by rain, wind or accident. The fuel is natural gas and is mixed with a controlled quantity of air to achieve the color and shape of the flame.

The entire site, a total of 3.2 acres, was set aside by the secretary of the Army, with the approval of the secretary of defense, to honor the memory of the president. The land has been retained for the nation as a whole and has not been deeded to the Kennedy family. The steep hillside has never been considered suitable for graves or a general burial location.
The Kennedy family paid actual costs in the immediate grave area. The government was responsible for the improvements in the surrounding area that provided for the accommodation of the visiting public. Funds in the amount of $1,770,000 were included for this purpose in Fiscal Year 1965's Public Works Appropriation.

In addition, $71,026 went to Ammann and Whitney, Structural Engineers, New York, N.Y. The Aberthaw Construction Company, Boston, Mass., carried out the work under the supervision of the U.S. Army District Engineering, Norfolk, Va.

Whatever,...and regarding King Barack Hussein Obama II or Jr. Decreeing SAVING TONS of ENERGY by going His Buddy Immelt's QUITE PROFITABLE windmill route, shutting off perpetual flames, or Barack: "Stupidly" advising just filling tires properly INSTEAD of sensibly producing Needed American Jobs jobs by drilling in Vast Reserves of American Oil,...it's all just Political Diversionary Bull. Lords will always rule & dictate as wished. It's a worldwide reality.

TOTAL CONTROL means TOTAL TOP TO BOTTOM LORDLY CONTROL,....and that's that.
Sooooooooo,...just hope & pray for the best. Maybe pray for some Safety, Security & Survival for we most likely: "Targets of Opportunity for Fanatical Islam", also?

Things just don't look good, here. It's sadly obvious that America's Political Rulers more so now: "Remember The Alamo" or consider such of Great Importance & Significance,...than do similarly of Today's Anniversary or EVEN MORE DESPICABLE; "Day of Infamy than Pearl Harbor, and/or; "9/11".

Sure makes one wonder where Many High Office Allegiances ACTUALLY lay, and especially TODAY?

World War II losses in Estonia are estimated at around 25% of the total population and were among the highest in Europe.

This at the hands of the Germans AND the Soviets.

Yep, they're right about that cost.

What I don't understand is why when some blogger is exposed to be lying, it doesn't initiate a sense of outrage in the people who he has fooled? If he is preaching to the choir and tell them a lie, shouldn't they throw the a***ole out on the street? It doesn't happen. Instead they come back with some form of "And you're another".
