Default Shoulder Ropes

When I left Vietnam, while in Pleiku, they gave me a rope to wear on my left side. It was Dark colored with red and other colors in there. I was kinda in a hurry as he said this is from the 35th, and I think he said something like , Westmorland gave it to the 4th infantry, but then he might of been talking about his shoes, Like I said , I was in a hurry. In dress uniform or Kakies I wore the rope on the left side and the light blue on the Right side.
Got ropes?

Shoulder rope, commonly called "lanyard".

Proper name is "fourragere".

Light bue - infantry

White - Military Police

Gold - Signals

Don't remember the others.

The 82nd has a red and green braided fourragere which is an award decoration from the Belgian government for WW2.

When I was in Technical School at Keesler AFB,MS we wore Blue ropes for being on the Drill Team.I was on the 11th Training Sq Drill Team. Our Sq Leaders wore Red,Yellow or Green Ropes also depending on their level of responsibility. The Red was highest lvl while Yellow was next and Green the lowest lvl.

Post they had these ascots

They had these ascots that the guys wore. I never wore them but in some companies guys wore those things. I thought they looked dumb and was glad our company didn't wear them. The honor guard from Fort Devens wore Shoulder Ropes. I don't think they were for anything in particular except decoration, I'm probably wrong but that was my assumption.

Steve,

I may be wrong.....which would be weird, but if I remember correctly the red and green Belgian Rope was known as the "Blood and Guts" rope amoungst those of Airborne status. Probably something Frisco could answer. I'll see if I can find out also. I had a Blue Infantry one after AIT. Didn't wear it after Vietnam. As a matter of fact, don't even know what happened to it.

We called it the Secret Decoder for Assholes --you know, like you used to get in cereal boxes. Another one was "VD Braid" It was a freebie, came with the unit. I believe they were unit awards for WWII European service.
We used to wear a camo ascot in Panama, this was only for parade. We wore it with khakis.
Stay good, Pack
James

Chanute AFB Tech School; the student "leaders" wore ropes
green ropes - sort of like a 2nd Lt
yellow ropes - 2nd in command to...
red ropes - squadron student leaders; more or less "colonels" who got there own room in the barracks while the rest of the peons slept in open bays. The Tech School I attended was about 3 months long so the turnover for the "ropes" was fairly often. We had a couple of "reds" who were transformed by the rank; they went from jagoff to complete asshole.
