Crowd bids Westphall farewell
Crowd bids Westphall farewell
(EXCERPT) ANGEL FIRE — On a sunny summer day Saturday, July 26, Dr. Victor Walter Westphall, 89, was buried with full military honors on a hilltop overlooking the Moreno Valley — yards away from the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial on a parcel of the Val Verde Ranch that was his home the past 35 years. Westphall died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, of natural causes in his apartment at the memorial visitor center. Saturday, several hundred veterans, family members, friends and admirers paid tribute to the man who chose to honor Vietnam veterans at a time when few, if any, would recognize their sacrifice, or their suffering. During Westphall’s funeral — conducted by retired chaplain John Snider — friends and family paid tribute, including his sister Merline Kyle and granddaughter Kimberly Westphal...
