CNN:

US Increasingly Concerned About Iranian Proxy Attacks

“A US intelligence assessment conducted in recent days has concluded that Iranian-backed militias and proxy forces could be planning a strike against US military forces or interests in the Middle East, according to three defense officials. Officials emphasize their concern centers around the threat from those militias located in Syria and several other locations in the Middle East. They all describe the potential threat as ongoing and worrisome. However, they would not describe the specific intelligence that continues to be gathered. These militias have increased access to ballistic missile and other advanced weapons inventories as Iran continues to move weaponry into Syria. While there are no specific indicators of an Iranian attack, the concerns stem in part from Iran's statements that the US was one of the countries behind an attack on an Iranian military parade this month that killed at least 29 people. National security adviser John Bolton's issued a stark warning to Iran at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, "If you cross us, our allies, or our partners; if you harm our citizens; if you continue to lie, cheat, and deceive, yes, there will indeed be hell to pay.”

Netherlands Police Arrests Foil 'Major Terrorist Attack'

“Police in the Netherlands have arrested seven men over an alleged plot to carry out what they describe as a major terrorist attack involving guns and explosives. Police say the men were trying to source AK47s, hand grenades and bomb materials to carry out their attack. The men, aged between 21 and 34, were arrested on Thursday. Three had been arrested previously for trying to travel abroad to join foreign militants. Prosecutors say the man at the centre of the group is a 34-year-old of Iraqi origin, who was convicted in 2017 for trying to travel to fight for the Islamic State group. They say they were tipped off about the plot in April 2018 by intelligence services, who said the main suspect wanted to target "a large event in the Netherlands where there would be a lot of victims".The seven men were arrested in the central city of Arnhem and southern municipality of Weert on Thursday afternoon by anti-terrorism teams from the country's Special Interventions Service (DSI).”

U.S.-Led Fight On Islamic State Killed More Than 1,100 Civilians: Pentagon

“More than 1,100 civilians have been killed in U.S.-led strikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria since the operation began in 2014, the U.S. military said on Thursday. The coalition fighting Islamic State militants said in a statement that during the month of August it had determined that an additional 53 civilians had been killed unintentionally, bringing the total to at least 1,114 civilian deaths since August 2014. The military’s official tally is far below those of outside organizations. The monitoring group Airwars says at least 6,575 civilians have been killed by coalition strikes. Twenty civilians were killed in a strike on Islamic State “fighting positions,” explosives factory and a command and control center in May 2017 near Mosul, Iraq, the coalition said. “We continue to employ thorough and deliberate targeting and strike processes to minimize the impact of our operations on civilian populations and infrastructure,” the military’s statement said. The U.S.-led coalition, along with local partners, has largely cleared the militant group from Iraq and Syria but remains concerned about its resurgence.”

Israel Releases Images Alleging Hezbollah Missile Project In Beirut

“The Israeli military on Thursday released a video clip and photos of what it said were Hezbollah Shi'ite militia rocket building sites in Lebanon. The images were distributed minutes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the U.N. General Assembly that Israel had evidence that Iran was helping Hezbollah give its missiles precision-guided accuracy. "In Lebanon, Iran is directing Hezbollah to build secret sites to convert inaccurate projectiles into precision-guided missiles, missiles that can target deep inside Israel within an accuracy of 10 metres (yards)," he said. Reuters was not immediately able to verify the Israeli assertions in Netanyahu's speech and in the five photographs and the 76-second clip released by the Israel Defence Forces. The clip refers to a "Missile Accuracy Project (MAP)" which Israel said Hezbollah had tried to transfer "to the heart of the city of Beirut. The Israeli military said the deployment of the facilities close to Beirut international airport were "knowingly jeopardizing the Lebanese civilian population."

Tech Firms Face Bias Accusations At Congressional Hearing

“A day before Google’s chief was set to meet with high-ranking Republicans, critics in a congressional hearing accused the internet giant and other tech firms of being “insular” and dismissive of the free-speech rights of conservatives. The contentious hearing, the latest such congressional event in recent months, could drive calls for stricter regulation of Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., GOOGL 1.11% and other big tech companies and stoke concerns of their political bias—including accusations that such bias influences content on their platforms—in the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections. Meanwhile, an audio recording of a Google internal meeting, surfaced this week, could add to the company’s headaches. The recording, from earlier this year, shows numerous employees raising objections to the company’s sponsorship this year of the Conservative Political Action Conference, known as CPAC, a high-profile annual gathering for politicians and pundits. Some Google employees questioned whether the firm was aligning itself with “Holocaust deniers” and engaging in “collaboration.”

Christian Science Monitor:

With New Missile Defense For Syria, Russia Shifts Its Relationship With Israel

“Russia has just taken a huge gamble in Syria. It will greatly strengthen Moscow's hand in determining the endgame in the seven-year-old civil war if it works. But it might lead to wider conflict if other powers accustomed to intruding into Syrian airspace with relative ease, particularly Israel, decide to challenge the move. The Russians have indicated that they will effectively impose what is known as A2/AD (anti-access/area denial) over the entire Syrian theater by supplying Syrian forces with advanced S-300 anti-aircraft systems. The missiles will be integrated into a single, computerized air defense network and supported by Russian-provided electronic jamming measures. It's not quite a “no fly zone,” since the Russians would be required to announce and enforce something like that directly. Experts say the system, which Moscow claims will be up and running within two weeks, will be under the nominal control of Syrian forces, but will almost certainly have a Russian finger on the trigger. If the move is implemented, it will compel the Israelis – who have launched 200 airstrikes against Syria in the past 18 months – as well as other active powers such as Turkey and the US-led coalition, to consult much more closely with Moscow if they wish to pursue their separate military objectives in Syria, or risk taking losses. “

Iranian Revolutionary Guards Warns Saudi Arabia, UAE To Respect Its 'Red Lines'

“Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) told Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on Friday to respect Tehran’s “red lines” or face retaliation, as the United States and its Gulf allies increase pressure on Tehran to curb its regional influence. Iran accuses Saudi Arabia and the UAE of funding five gunmen who attacked a military parade in Iran last Saturday and killed 25 people, 12 of them members of the elite IRGC. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have denied any involvement. “If you cross our red lines, we will surely cross yours. You know the storm the Iranian nation can create,” the Fars news agency quoted Brigadier General Hossein Salami, deputy head of the Guards, as saying. Addressing worshippers attending Friday prayers in Tehran, Salami said in a strongly-worded speech: “Stop creating plots and tensions. You are not invincible. You are sitting in a glass house and cannot tolerate the revenge of the Iranian nation... We have shown self-restraint.”

Marine Corps F-35 Flies First Combat Mission In Afghanistan

“The U.S. Marine Corps F-35B joint strike fighter has successfully conducted its first combat mission over Afghanistan, U.S. officials confirmed to Military Times. The strikes, carried out by F-35Bs assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, occurred Thursday morning against a fixed target “in support of ground clearance operations,” and were deemed a success by the ground force commander, according to a statement put out by U.S. Naval Forces Central Command on Thursday afternoon. Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211 made history earlier this month as they became the first squadron with F-35Bs to deploy to the U.S. Central Command area of operations aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship Essex. “The F-35B is a significant enhancement in theater amphibious and air warfighting capability, operational flexibility, and tactical supremacy,” said Vice Adm. Scott Stearney, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central command. “As part of the Essex Amphibious Ready Group, this platform supports operations on the ground from international waters, all while enabling maritime superiority that enhances stability and security.” “The opportunity for us to be the first Navy, Marine Corps team to employ the F-35B in support of maneuver forces on the ground demonstrates one aspect of the capabilities this platform brings to the region, our allies, and our partners,” said Col. Chandler Nelms, commanding officer of the 13th MEU.”

Pakistan Continues To Support Taliban: Afghan Leader

Pakistan continues to support the Taliban and there has been no change in its policy despite the formation of the new government under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, a top Afghan leader has said. Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said at the Council on Foreign Relations on Wednesday that for the peace and the talks to get serious, a few things are required. He said that there was a need to pursuade those who support the Taliban. "One is that those ho are supporting Taliban need to be persuaded and convinced or persuaded that they should stop support. And one country is key to that, which is Pakistan," Abdullah said in response to a question. He pointed out that even after the formation of the new government in Pakistan the "real change has not taken place as far as their policy" towards Taliban is concerned. "In the past they have made promises that they will bring the reconcilable Taliban to the negotiating table and put pressure on others. We have seen none in that sense. But still we are hopeful," he said.”

India

The New Arab:

India Is Fabricating Islamic State Threat To Stamp Out Kashmiri Activism

“The 'War on Terror' narrative is the gift that keeps on giving to illiberal, anti-democratic, and authoritarian regimes the world over. A narrative that allows invaders, occupiers, and dictators to freely use the label terrorist as a pejorative term, one that conflates anti-colonial resistance movements, liberation struggles and civil rights groups with "radical Islamic terrorism," which, by default, brands every bearded Muslim holding a banner, stone, or gun a "terrorist", no matter whether their cause is legal, moral, or just. For more than three decades, Israel has successfully conned the world into believing it is waging a fight against "Islamic terrorism," and not the liberation aspirations of a people it illegally occupies and represses. This lesson in propaganda was previously demonstrated by China, which has falsely claimed it is fighting "radical Islamists" in East Turkistan - a territory China has occupied since 1989 - when, in fact, it's suppressing the liberation aspirations of 12 million Uighur. Myanmar has also used the cloak of "Islamic terrorism" to fig leaf its genocide of 1.3 million Rohingya. Then there is Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian dictator, who cynically and sinisterly took the "war on terror" narrative one step further. First, Assad tried to con the international community, particularly the United States, into believing his regime was fighting a terrorist led-revolt.”

Yemen Activist Once Held By Houthis Slams UN Peace Drive As ‘Naive’

“A Yemeni activist who was held and allegedly tortured for months by Houthi militia this week criticized the UN-backed peace process for his country as “naive,” warning against “humanizing” his captors. Hisham Al-Omeisy, an outspoken activist, journalist and political commentator, was arrested in August 2017 after speaking out against restrictions and corruption in Houthi-held areas of the war-ravaged country. Omeisy says the Houthis accused him of being an American and Saudi spy. “I was tortured in prison... They employed barbaric measures,” he told AFP in an interview on the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. He warned that UN officials trying to bring both sides to the table to hammer out a peace deal were being “played by the Houthis.”

Reaction: Ending Houthi Control Of Port City Hodeidah Could Lead To Peace In Yemen

“In front of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump warned that Iran is spreading “chaos, death and destruction” across the Middle East. One of those places is Yemen, where the Islamic Republic is using the Shiite Houthi rebels as a vehicle for their regional ambitions. The Coalition offensive in Hodeidah has restarted in earnest, following a hiatus in the fighting aimed at allowing UN peacekeeper Martin Griffiths time to seek a political solution. That time ran out after the Houthi leadership, like the plane due to fly them to Geneva for peace talks, remained grounded in Saana. This isn’t the first time the Houthis have stalled peace efforts before they’ve even begun, with the latest no-show a near carbon copy of their failure to appear at talks two years ago. It is now clear that a peaceful solution to the conflict can only be found through the capture of Hodeidah by Coalition forces, as sanctioned by UN Resolution 2216. UN Resolution 2216 mandates the Yemeni Government and Coalition to ensure all territory seized by the Houthis, including Hodeidah, is returned to the internationally recognised Hadi government. Diplomacy has failed and the recapture of the port is the only way to jumpstart the political process.”

Khaleej Times:

Hadi Rejects Talks With Houthis, Seeks Tough Stance To End War

“Yemen's president on Wednesday dismissed UN-led attempts to bring Houthi rebels to peace talks as "doomed to fail", telling the United Nations that a firm stance was needed to end the war. Earlier this month, the Houthis failed to turn up at talks convened by a UN peace envoy in Geneva, leaving peace efforts in disarray as Yemen's humanitarian crisis worsens. "All attempts at peace that are made with this group are doomed to fail," President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi told the UN General Assembly, describing the Houthis as "extremists who employ gangster-like tactics" and "create hate". "Peace cannot be obtained by cajoling those gangsters as some member-states do," he said. The United Nations invited Hadi's government and the Houthis to Geneva to re-start talks that broke down in 2016. But the Iran-aligned Houthis refused to leave the capital Sanaa, which they hold, and put forward a series of last-minute demands for the evacuation of wounded and the release of prisoners. Hadi said the international community must be "resolute" and stick to Security Council resolutions that call on the Houthis to withdraw from territory they have seized. Since 2015, Saudi Arabia has been leading a military campaign to restore Hadi's internationally recognised government to power and push back the Houthis. The war has left nearly 10,000 people dead and unleashed what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The United States, along with France and Britain, have supported the Saudi coalition in Yemen, but the western powers have expressed concern over the heavy toll on civilians. The UN aid chief warned last week that relief agencies were losing the fight against famine in Yemen, where 3.5 million people may soon be added to the eight million Yemenis already facing starvation.”

Taliban Meets Afghan Officials In Saudi Arabia Ahead Of Election: Sources

“Representatives from the Taliban met an Afghan government delegation in Saudi Arabia this week to discuss security ahead of next month’s parliamentary elections and a limited prisoner release, three Taliban officials said. The meeting comes less than a month before voters are due to go to the polls on Oct. 20 to elect a new Afghan parliament, a process which has been hampered by fears of attacks on polling stations and campaign rallies. Ensuring the election passes off smoothly and without violence has been a top priority for the Afghan government and its international partners. “They requested us to help them conduct peaceful elections,” said one of the Taliban leaders. “The Afghan delegation has agreed with us on the release of prisoners,” he said, adding that some prisoners facing minor charges had already been released and officials had divided up others into three categories, depending on their importance, for future release. Both President Ashraf Ghani’s office and the U.S. State Department declined to comment. No comment was available from Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s main spokesman. The Taliban, who regard the internationally recognized Afghan government as an illegitimate regime imposed by foreign powers, have generally insisted on negotiating only with the United States but there have been regular unofficial contacts.”

Quartet To Wait 50 Years For Qatar ‘Right Move’

“The four countries that have boycotted Qatar are willing to wait for up to 50 years for Doha to change its behaviour, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister has said. “Relations will be frozen until they (the Qataris) change and I hope they will change, and if they don’t change we’re a patient people. We’ll wait for 10-15, 20, 50 years. How long did it take you [the US] with Castro and Cuba? We can do the same with Qatar!” Adel Al Jubeir said at an event at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt in June last year cut off their diplomatic, trade and travel relations with Qatar after they accused it of supporting extremists and funding terrorism. The Quartet insisted that Qatar didn’t need support from other countries and knew exactly what it should do to end the crisis. Saudi officials have often said that the crisis was not at the top of their priorities or preoccupations and that Doha needed to face reality.”

Netanyahu, In U.N. Speech, Claims Secret Iranian Nuclear Site

“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday described what he said was a secret atomic warehouse in Tehran and accused Europe of appeasing Iran as he sought to rally support for U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Netanyahu showed an aerial photograph of the Iranian capital marked with a red arrow and pointed to what he said was a previously secret warehouse holding nuclear-related material. He argued this showed Iran still sought to obtain nuclear weapons, despite its 2015 agreement with world powers to curb its program in exchange for loosening of sanctions. Netanyahu spoke 4-1/2 months after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the accord, arguing it did too little to rein in Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and triggering the resumption of U.S. economic sanctions on Iran. Netanyahu said the site contained some 15 kg (33 pounds) of radioactive material that has since been moved, and called on the U.N. atomic agency to inspect the location immediately with Geiger counters.”

New Cease-Fire Holds After Clashes Kill 117 In Libya

“A recent bout of heavy fighting in the capital Tripoli has come to a halt after warring militias signed a new cease-fire agreement, Libyan authorities said Wednesday. The U.N.-backed government said in a statement it welcomed the cease-fire agreement, which was brokered by local representatives and tribal leaders. Fighting in Tripoli first erupted on Aug. 26 when the 7th Brigade comprised of militias hailing from Tarhouna, a town about 40 miles (60 kilometers) south of Tripoli, attacked southern neighborhoods of the capital. The Tripoli Revolutionaries’ Brigades and the Nawasi Brigade, militias which support the U.N.-backed government, came to the city’s defense. Clashes flared up again last week, breaking a previous, U.N.-brokered cease-fire that began earlier this month. At least 117 people, including civilians, have been killed in the fighting and another 404 wounded. Twenty people remain missing since fighting first began there, the Health Ministry said.”

Boko Haram: How We Bombed Insurgents’ Tactical Headquarters – NAF

“The Nigerian Air Force says its Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole has destroyed Boko Haram hideout at a settlement known as Bakassi near Daban Masara on the fringes of Lake Chad in the Northern part of Borno. Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, adding that the operation was carried out on Wednesday. Daramola stated that the attack at Bakassi followed days of Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. He noted that “The attack at Bakassi was carried out on Sept.26, following days of Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions that led to the identification of a group of buildings and makeshift shelters in the settlement that were being used by terrorists as Tactical Headquarters from where they launch attacks against own troops’ positions. “Accordingly, the location was attacked by a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft leading to damage of some of the structures and neutralization of several terrorists.” He also said that the ATF, in close coordination with troops of 145 Battalion Nigerian Army (NA), repelled a Boko Haram attack at Gashigar. “Also, later in the evening on Sept.26, the ATF received intelligence report that a group of the insurgents in several gun trucks and on motorcycles were advancing for an attack on own troops position at Gashigar.”

Afghan Jihadist, 15 Other Al-Shabab Militants Killed In Somalia

“An Afghanistan Jihadist fighting alongside Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab and 16 other militants were killed in joint military operation carried out near Marka town, some 91km southwest of Somali capital Mogadishu. Somali military says the operation was carried out in Jilib Marka near the town, leaving 16 militants, including an Afghan jihadist by the name Nasir Al-Jabiri dead. In a statement, the military said the joint offensive was conducted according to the plan. There was no immediate comment from Al Shabaab over the military claims. Al-Shabab has been waging an insurgency in Somalia for more than 10 years. A 22,000-strong African Union force is in the country to help the government fight the al-Qaeda-linked militants. The group has been driven out of many urban areas since 2011, however it still controls territory in rural areas and carries out gun attacks and bombings on military and civilian targets.”

Ethiopia Charges 5 With Terrorism Over Assassination Attempt

“Ethiopia's attorney general on Friday filed terrorism charges against five people accused of trying to "kill the prime minister" at a huge rally in the capital in June, barely two months after the reformist leader took office. The charges say the five acted on the premise that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is not popular among Oromos, Ethiopia's largest ethnic group, and wanted to pave the way for the once-banned Oromo Liberation Front. That group's leaders recently returned after Abiy's government in July removed it from a terror list and invited all exiled groups to participate in politics. Abiy, Ethiopia's first prime minister from the Oromo ethnic group, has announced sweeping and largely popular reforms since taking office in April, but ethnic tensions in Africa's second most populous country pose his biggest challenge. A bomb thrown at the stage while Abiy waved to the crowd of tens of thousands in Addis Ababa's Meskel Square on June 23 killed two people and wounded more than 150.”

U.S., Russia Clash At U.N. As Lavrov Calls For Easing Of North Korea Sanctions

“The Trump administration worked to move ahead on its top diplomatic priority—the denuclearization of North Korea—but ran head-on into opposition to its plans from Russia, which called for the easing of United Nations sanctions against Pyongyang. The proposal by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the U.N. Security Council ran directly counter to the U.S. demand that countries maintain strong economic pressure aimed at forcing the country to give up its nuclear weapons. While the U.S. could veto any proposal to lift sanctions, and most countries on the 15-member Security Council spoke in favor of strictly enforcing sanctions, the remarks undermined a united international message to North Korea at a time when the U.S. and U.N. have found lapses and leaks in sanctions enforcement world-wide. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who chaired the meeting, announced plans to travel to Pyongyang in October to set up another summit meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. But while laboring to push the diplomacy forward, the U.S. has said international sanctions must remain in place to ensure North Korea’s continued cooperation.”

Britain Tells Iran It Will Not Let Matter Of Detained Aid Worker Rest

“British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Thursday he had had a frank discussion with his Iranian counterpart about detained British-Iranian aid worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and that he would not let the matter rest. “Iran is detaining innocent people as an instrument of diplomatic leverage and we can’t accept that,” Hunt told Sky news from New York where he is attending the United Nations General Assembly. “I had a very, very frank discussion with the Iranian foreign minister ... and I made it very clear that our policy to Iran is not settled and there will be consequences if they continue to think that this is a tool of diplomacy,” he added. Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a project manager with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, was arrested in April 2016 at a Tehran airport as she headed back to Britain with her daughter after a family visit. She was sentenced to five years in jail after being convicted of plotting to overthrow Iran’s clerical establishment, a charge denied by her family and the Foundation, a charity organisation that operates independently of Thomson Reuters and Reuters News.”

German Police Reportedly Arrest Syrian In Berlin For Plotting Chemical Attack In Israel

“German authorities arrested a 21-year-old Syrian in Berlin last week for allegedly plotting a chemical attack in Israel, a police spokesperson told German media on Thursday. The Syrian, who is said to have arrived via Libya with a fake passport and had previously been arrested for theft, was reportedly recruiting terrorists on behalf of ISIS, according to Bild. Germany's Federal Intelligence Service received a tip from a foreign ally on the suspect and passed on the information to local authorities who began tapping his phone, the German BZ newspaper added. Police said he was also wanted for assault at the time of his arrest. He was arrested next to a coffee shop in Berlin's Neuköln borough, allegedly over his involvement in a fight. Masked special forces officers armed with machine guns detained him as police blocked nearby roads.”

Arrests In Denmark Suggest ISIS Still Has Drone Buyers In Europe

“Somewhere in a hobbyshop in Denmark, a set of rotors were destined to a life of violence. Attached to a model plane, or perhaps a quadcopter, this drone likely waited on a shelf, perhaps for months, to see if its new owners would take it on hikes, or for family photos, or maybe even film some kayaking from above. Instead, the drone was intended for service as either an insurgent scout or weapon. It never made it, because on September 26th, police in Denmark arrested two people on suspicion of buying drones bound for the Islamic State. We know little more about this exact case. It was part of an ongoing investigation, and the suspects were specifically arrested under Denmark’s anti-terror laws. We do know considerably more about the flow of drones from Europe to ISIS, thanks to diligent work by arms investigators and trackers. In July, the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point released a report on the Islamic State’s drone supply line. One notable component of the supply chain were a range of IT and web service companies, all named variations on IBACs, run by a pair of Bangladeshi brothers named Siful Haque Sujan and Ataul Haque Sujan. When these brothers joined the Islamic State, the Center reports they converted their companies to fronts to supply money and material to ISIS. The companies run by the brothers operated in the United Kingdom, Bangladesh, and Spain, as well as having business activity in Australia, the United States, and, notably for the news this week, Denmark.”

Netherlands Says Major Terrorist Attack At Public Event Foiled, 7 Arrested

“Dutch police arrested seven men Thursday suspected of plotting to carry out a major terrorist attack at a public event using explosive belts and an AK-47 assault rifle, the public prosecutor’s office said. “Police arrested seven men on Thursday… suspected of being at a very advanced stage of preparation for a major terrorist attack in the Netherlands,” it said in a statement, adding one of the suspects had wanted to kill “many victims.” Prosecutors and investigators were “convinced that a terrorist attack was prevented” as a result of the arrests in the cities of Arnhem and Weert which followed a months-long police operation. Officers had placed a group of people under surveillance, a central figure being a 34-year-old man of Iraqi origin convicted in 2017 of attempting to reach territory controlled by the Islamic State terror group, the statement added. Those arrested ranged in age from 21 to 34. The suspects came from Arnhem, Rotterdam, and villages close to those two cities. Two others in the group also had convictions related to attempts to travel to Iraq or Syria. “One of the men from Arnhem wanted to commit an attack with a group at a major event in the Netherlands and kill many victims, according to the Dutch Intelligence Service [AIVD],” the prosecutor’s office said.”
