JONES CALLS ON SPEAKER TO HONOR FALLEN HEROES IN CAPITOL EXHIBIT

Washington, D.C. - In a letter this week to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Third District Representative Walter B. Jones (R-NC) requested that the Speaker take the necessary steps to establish an exhibit in the U.S. Capitol to honor those Americans who have lost their lives while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Congressman Jones and Congressman Rahm Emanuel previously asked Speaker Hastert to establish a temporary exhibit in the Capitol to honor the members of the United States Armed Forces who have lost their lives in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Jones and Emanuel subsequently cosponsored H.Con.Res 506 in the waning days of the 108th Congress which would have directed the Architect of the Capitol to establish such an exhibit.

"While Speaker Hastert ultimately did have a modest memorial placed in the foyer of the Rayburn House Office Building, I continue to believe that a tribute more commensurate with the sacrifice made by those who have paid the ultimate price for this nation is in order," Jones wrote to Speaker Pelosi.

"The collective debt that we owe those who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan is at least as great as the debt owed to many of the Americans currently honored in the Capitol Rotunda," Jones continued. "They have earned the right to be honored in our Capitol - not in the lobby of an office building."

"I look forward to working with you, Congressman Emanuel, and others to ensure that those who have died in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom are properly honored," Jones concluded.
