12 Generals killed
12 Generals died in Vietnam, 6 Brigadiers and 6 Major Generals. General Casey, already mentioned was an MG and commander ofthe 1st Cav when he went down. Of the Brigadiers, five were Army and one Air Force. Of the Major Generals, three were Army, One Marine and two Air Force.
BGEN William Ross Bond, commander of the 199th LIB at the time of his death, was the only general officer killed in ground combat. He was shot by a sniper on April 1, 1970 shortly after stepping off a helicopter with his troops in the field. All others appear to be either by air crash or natural causes. Two division commanders, Casey of the 1st Cav and Keith Ware of the 1st ID were killed in Vietnam Air Crashes. It is not believed either crash was by hostile fire.
