Lightbulb Military patches & insignia

Is there any one best online or book source where a person can see pictures of 20th century (at least) military patches and insignia, AND learn about the histories of the units??

I'm particularly interested in the army patches since they have so incredibly many.

I'm in Tulsa, so our public library is pretty good. But online would be easier, of course. We have reserve and guard units here too of course, would they maybe have something they'd let me see?

reeb :

Tell me what you are looking for, and I will see what I can do. Be specific, I don't know much about the Navy. Thanks.

I entered "army unit patches" on a Google search and was given several pages of stuff. A pretty good one that I looked at was at http://www.1armystore.com/Smart/patchesa.html

Good Luck

Maybe you have already checked the gallery here but if you have not we have a good number of patches posted. We also have a number of histories posted for units with many hundreds more to come.

Thanks Frisco and David -

very much.

I saw on PF only the avatars, which are wonderful. How do I get to the unit histories on PF?

If you click the Gallery link at the top of the page you will get to over 8000 military related pictures. To get to unit histories click on the sections link on the home page. I think it is mostly airforce right now in that section but hundreds more will be added over time.

Bern -
THAT is amazing! I had no idea at all the Air Force now has so many patches... I must have missed a whole lot more than I realize in the past 40 years. When I was in, I believe it is correct to say that we had only Command patches (e.g. SAC, TAC, MATS, ATC etc.), and then some "group" patches. None were worn on dress blues at all, except in a plastic sleeve hung from left breast pocket (likewise on fatigues). The first unit patch on a sleeve I saw on an airman's fatigues was worn by a NCO returning from Da Nang, I think it was a dark blue field with several white stars, maybe circular shaped, with a tab that said 'MAAG" over it in the same colors.

Anyhow, thanks for showing me a way to research all that.

I am looking for the AZ2 Navy insignia that stands for Aviation Maintenance Administration.

It is a flying book.

Thanks.
