Devastation. That was the word of the day. Remember those? Back in Basic training our DS would write a word of the day on the board for all to see on the way out of the door. Something witty or funny like "what's the word of the day?" "Leg's, spread the word!" Move ahead now to another day, another country. Iraq, early 1991, the air war had just started. We had pulled into a refueling center. I will set the scene here. 50-60 columns, Heavy armour, M1A1's, Bradlys, Hummers, MLRS's, shelters, command&control units, patriot platforms, the list goes on and on. 50-60 columns wide of this, so loud you can't really hear, so much dust/sand flying you can't really see. Overhead, B52's, smaller fighters, escorts, observers, refuelers, apaches, all moving to one point. All moving to the front, all at one time. But first refueling for the ground pounders. We waited in line for what seemed like hours to get to the semi's with the fuel. About 5 vehicles back before hitting the refueler we get a news update from "Stormin Norman" relating the targets that were now being hit, hit real hard. Chemical plants, factories, the front lines. You name it, it was getting the shit bombed out of it. He had some stats for us too. Something like "15% casualties - chemical targets" "20% casualties - factory targets" ect ect. "The word of the day", Norman says, "The word of the day is Devastation". "Now radio Blackout". The call went out, up and down the line. To all the soldiers who did not have radios or were busy during the announcement. "The word of the day is devastation". We cheered, we yelled, mostly we felt strong and proud to be a soldier. My hair stands up all over my body writing this. I have never and am sure will never feel again how I felt that day, that very minute. I beheld the strongest, most capable, most deadly fighting force ever assembled and fielded on the face of the earth. I witnessed them on that initial high, before the reality sinks in. I will never forget that day or what it wrought - Devastation

Hey brother, I remember those feeling too. Still hard to talk about sometimes. I was DS/GS to the VII Corp. My battalion, 1/158th FA(MLRS) fired for five divisions in four days. From breeching with the 1st ID to slamming the door with 2nd ACR near Basra. To coin a phrase "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times!"

Keep up the fire!
