Exclamation Long Lost Airman Finally To Be Returned Home!

Sixty-three years and 400 lbs of ice are all that remains of one of our gallant airmen lost in California during World War II! And of the nearly 30 airplanes that went down in rough terrain in the Golden State during the Second World War, some still rest undiscovered, their whereabouts known but to God!

After locating the remains of a downed flier in a glaciated area of Kings Canyon National Park, a slow thawing process was begun before the body could be flown to the Military Identification Laboratories in Hawaii. From there, dental and medical charts will be utilized to determine who this long lost airman was!

The body of this Air Corpsman was discovered on Mount Mendel by hikers and is believed to have been there since November 18, 1942, when a Army AT-7 went missing in that area. And for the record, that area of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range contains some of the most desolate wilderness to be had anywhere in the nation. A region where even experienced trekkers can get into deep trouble in a heartbeat!

The man who was wearing no dog tags (none found as yet) had on a parachute and is believed to have taken off from Mather Field in the Sacramento area, some 63 years ago. And although rare, other long lost military aircraft have also been found after decades of being reported as missing within these unforgiving mountains!

So after six long decades, yet another American Warrior will soon be returned home for a proper burial and military honors. Unfortunately however, many thousands more still lay in far distant graves and may never be recovered?

The remains of those who went down to watery grave in service to this nation, may themselves never again be repatriated, not even in death! But this, however, must never dull our memories nor our admiration of those who gave their all to keep us free - they are still with us in effect, if but in spirit! ?These heroes must never be taken for granted or forgotten!?
