Default Photo Release: Coast Guard Cutter Kukui tests Spilled Oil Recovery System

HONOLULU — Coast Guard Cutter Kukui crewmembers prepare to deploy the fast sweep boom, a component of the Spilled Oil Recovery System, in Honolulu Harbor Dec. 14, 2010.

The SORS is designed to quickly deploy in the event of an oil spill. The system uses the boom to concentrate the oily sheen into one area where it is sucked from the surface and pumped into a storage container. The oil can later be transferred to an appropriate recycling or disposal facility.
