One of your angels,...
EAST GREENBUSH - Retired Lt. Col. Frances M. Liberty, Army Nurse Corps, died Monday, March 1, 2004, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy.
She was born in Plattsburgh on September 14, 1923, the daughter of the late Lawrence J. and Anna Lavigne Liberty. At the age of 9, she moved with her family to Watervliet and was educated at St. Brigid's School and later graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy. She returned to Plattsburgh and enrolled in a three-year nursing program at Champlain Valley Physician's Hospital. She later received a BA degree from Columbia University in New York and a MA degree from Catholic University in Washington, DC. In 1943, Frances enlisted in the U.S. Army and served her country as a nurse during World War II, the Korean War and later in the Vietnam War. During World War II, she served in field hospitals in England, Africa and Italy. During the Korean War, Frances rode the hospital trains, transporting wounded soldiers from Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) units to various station hospitals. Later, Frances, also known as "Colonel Libby" served three tours of duty in Vietnam and was known as an expert on MASH units. She retired in 1971 after 27 years of service to our country and settled in East Greenbush. She was very active in establishing the World War II Veterans Memorial located next to the State Museum in Albany. Frances was a member of the Retired Military Nurses Association, the Melvin Roads American Legion Post 1231 and the Tri-County Council of Vietnam Veterans. She is the sister of Dorothy Cooper of Slatersville, RI, Dolores McDonald of Troy and the late George, Lawrence and Robert Liberty, Hilda Offenbacker, Lena Morris, Jane Adriance, Shirley Conners and Margaret Mackey. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. The funeral with full military honors will be Friday morning at 9:15 from Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet, and at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church in Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Randall Patterson, pastor. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum in Troy. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 North Lake Avenue, Troy, NY 12180, or to the Tri-County Vietnam Veterans, 257 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.
