Default Civil War in Missouri

Anyone want to discuss the civil war in Missouri? I love to research this chapter of our history and am hoping that perhaps we can get a discussion going.

Keith,
Thanks! I'll be sure to do that. By the way, it's good to hear from you again. It's been a long time!

Terry, I'm more of an eastern theater guy, but I do have a question for you. As a Missourian, what are your feelings about Fremont freeing the slaves and then Lincoln countermanding his order?

Regards,

Bill

General Grant had a Farm near St Louis were his wife kept a few slaves and if Freemonts order would have stood Lincoln might have lost one of his best Generals to the Confederacy. Just my Opinion......

Default More Civil War History

Sorry guys, but I had to drop off for awhile. I have been working on a book about Linn County Missouri veterans. Next week it will be off to the publishers! In the meantime I have had some very interesting submissions concerning the civil war. Nothing very earth shattering but still very interesting to me! I will try to share some of this with you over the next few weeks1 I do love civil war history and although I am no expert I do like to discuss and in turn ...learn! Merry Christmas!

Default Colonel Thaddeus J. Stauber

One of the names that came up when working on the linn County Missouri Veteran's History Book was that of Colonel Thaddeus J. Stauber. He was breveted to the rank of Brigadier General and helped organize and then commanded the 42nd Missouri Infantry Brigade (Union). Is there a database out there where I can find more info on him and others?
Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Terry, my suggestion is send off for his National Archives Military records , they sometimes have detailed descriptions of a persons service records. Jerry

Terry, I second Jerry's suggestion and will add a couple others from my own research into Illinois Civil War soldiers. You will want to go to the Missouri State Archives, as they will likely have the administrative files on the regiment, which will contain correspondence of a more, you guessed it, administrative angle. They will provide you with orders and other communications between the regimental staff and higher HQ.

In addition, go to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and head to their manuscript collection, as they may have personal letters for the unit (also check out the Missouri equivalent of the state historical library, as it will have personal letters from soldiers in the unit). Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis may have something, but I am not sure. Finally, go to the Library of Congress, as they have an extensive manuscript collection and may have letters from soldiers in the unit in their collections. As Jerry suggested, you will want to order the service record of the Col. from the National Archives, but be prepared to pay a high price, as they just raised their rates. The Archives may also contain what are known as Order Books for the regiment, which will contain the orders issued by the senior officers and NCO's of the regiment. Check out all of these sources and you will potentially have a gold mine of primary sources for your research. Good Luck.

Daniel
