Suffolk motorists caught speeding nears 50,000 in one year

New figures reveal that the number of motorists caught speeding in Suffolk has increased by approximately 5,500 in just one year. According to a report in the East Anglian Daily Times that pushes the total close to 50,000 speeding offences in one year.

More than £2 million has been generated from speed cameras over the past two years. These figures don’t include fines that have been avoided by motorists that have completed educational courses.

The figures were obtained following a freedom of information request by the EADT. The numbers show that 48,679 drivers were captured by fixed or mobile cameras in 2011. The report shows that 17,171 motorists received a standard fine of £60 and three points.

David Ball, Roads Policing Inspector and joint head of Suffolk Safety Camera Partnership (SafeCam), said that despite the increased number of speeding tickets, he believed more people understood the responsibility that comes with driving.

Peter Rodgers, head of driving standards at the Institute of Advanced Motoring, told the EADT that while deterrents like cameras were needed, so was education.

“The purpose of speed cameras is to prevent people speeding to make us behave. So the perfect speed camera wouldn’t catch anyone, “Rodgers added.
