DHS Continues to Support Puerto Rico Rebuilding

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen traveled to Puerto Rico to discuss Hurricane Maria recovery efforts. Secretary Nielsen was joined by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson. Secretaries Nielsen and Carson met with Governor Ricardo Rosselló, local mayors, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employees. She visited Puerto Rico earlier this year in her former role as White House Principal Deputy Chief of Staff where she toured the devastation. This is Secretary Nielsen’s first visit since being sworn-in on December 6, 2017. View photos and read more about her trip below.


Secretary Nielsen visited the FEMA Joint Field Office in Puerto Rico, where hundreds of FEMA staff and teams from other agencies work together to support Hurricane Maria recovery. The Secretary thanked employees for their tireless work since before the hurricane made landfall in September, and reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to rebuild communities in Puerto Rico. Secretary Nielsen and Secretary Carson met with Puerto Rico mayors to discuss ongoing recovery efforts. Secretary Nielsen thanked the mayors for their leadership and reiterated the Department’s commitment to support recovery. The meeting included San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, Ponce Mayor Maria Melendez, Cayey Mayor Rolando Ortiz, Guaynabo Mayor Angel Perez Otero, Bayamon Mayor Ramon Luis Rivera, and Mayaguez Vice Mayor Heriberto Acevedo.
