Post It has yet to end...

THE "COLD WAR" HAS YET TO END

A Cold War campaign ribbon has been duly issued, to be rightfully worn by all whose service took place during an era which is said to have begun in a year certain, and ended in a year certain much later on. The award was premature. A war of that magnitude and duration does not end merely by claiming that it has.

I submit that the war is neither over nor won. An unthinkable treasury of time, money and lives has been squandered on all sides.

It did not end when the Berlin Wall came down. It did not end with the demise of the Soviet Union.

The catastrophic conflict between capitalism and communism stiil rages on, despite american claims to the title of "sole remaining Super Power", or even "Hyper Power". Very populace and resourceful communist nations whose governments have been our sworn enemies still are so in their minds and in our own government's thinking. The presence of much smaller communist societies and movements throughout the world stubbornly persists with varying degrees of permanence. Though seldom mentioned, current-day disputes between the two opponents are now better cast in terms of those favoring "Global Economy" led and controlled by American with European Union interests, and those whose governments are seen as, or are, Stalinist and Socialist.

Even the finest Thoroughbred horse will suffer and eventually perish if it is intentionally starved.

...Your words of wisdom are well received,...

......Todays world relies on the media spreading the ill fated words rather then the positive aspects of life,...

...Cold war has turned into the frozen war, nothing has changed except that there is more to defend against,...

...the model of science has developed into who will pay the most to disrupt the tracks of free enterprise, and keep evil in play, days, and years, and events show promise, however acts of violence such as 9/11, and the bombings of institutions of peace such as the embassy's, senseless killings for greed, preservation of society for the good of all man kind beckons for the removal of OBL, and Sadumb, but there seems to be a never ending line of who's next...

...So we take them one at a time, or 100 at a time, take a number, get in line, shoot first, ask questions later,...

...America the beautiful will always be, even if we have to kill everyone else out there to keep it that way,...

..."NOT ON MY WATCH "

...Who's next..............

Vice Commander,

One day there will, and must, be an end... or it will be the end of all, frozen, as you say, in war itself.

Default How could it be over?

The only things changing in the last half-century are some Names of those historically being adversarial towards America, hating our guts, and would just as soon kill every American possible if given half-a-chance. Naturally, such cold warfare is usually conducted covertly by our enemies, since and even though hating our guts,...most our enemies are simply quite cowardly and/or gutless themselves.

Besides, and as long as there are DMZ's and many hot spots all over The world, where Americans must be 24/7 on Lock & Load, on guard and at the ready,...how-the-hell could anyone honestly believe that The Cold War is actually over. Hell, ask any forward element Trooper on The Korean DMZ just how much more safe and secure he feels, since politicos and pundits have declared The Cold War OVER? Seems to me that The North Koreans have gotten fiestier than ever, since The Cold War has foolishly been declared OVER.

Hell, even once cushy Marine Embassy Duty has gotten more dangerous since the foolishly proclaimed ending of The Cold War. But,...not to worry. Hot or Cold Wars,...there will always be The 7th Cav "To The Rescue" fellow Comrades in Arms. Besides, if my Alma Mater could handle surrounded and beleagured Khesan quite well, similarly bailing-out any embassy should be even easier. Wouldn't you think?

Hey Neil -

You are surely correct... I'd much rather put my life in the hands of the 7th Cav, or lst Cav, or 82nd Airborne, or Navy Seals, or SAC (or whatever the hell they call it these days), or 1st Marines...

However, for them to do that kind of work, they gotta have this government's money.

Just a thought...

Question Depends on how you define the Cold War?

Personally, If you define the Cold war as that period of political tension between the U.S. and communist bloc countries after WW2 then I believe that is over. However, I believe that what you see now is another phase developing between the U.S. (the Haves) and the Have-nots). This is an era where we have to be extremely careful. As I see it we are slowly evolving into the world's policeman. It is a dangerous role to fall into. The Clinton years have dragged down our military's capability to fight a multfront war. At this point we must pick and chose our fights.

Someone upstairs has to make a decision about a number of things. What will our role be vis-avis Israel and the middle east? What about Syria and Iran and North Korea? Why do we still have troops in Germany? What about the situation in Liberia?

I am going to say something very unpopular here but I think it needs to be addressed. We NEED more military! Can we get enough new enlistees or do we have to return to the draft? We are going after terrorism, we are fighting/occupying Afghanistan.
Do military commanders actually believe there are enough troops to handle all the hot spots where we may be asked to go?

We need more funds to keep developing improved weapons and ships. That priority changes on a regular basis depending on which party is in office. So as I saee it, a lot of long range decisions need to be made and they have to be backed up by funds and personnel. Who are we going to ally ourselves with and who are we going to defend ourselves against.

Right now, I think we just react. Is there a comprehensive plan out there to be more proactive? Some would argue the invasion of Afghanistan indicates we are proactive. where is Bin Laden? Where is Saddam? Have we failed because we have not cut off the head of the tyrant?

I think there are too many unanswered questions right now. If this were the 80's, I think the military would be in great shape. Now I'm not talking about the guys and gals here, I am talking about money and numbers of personnel. I think the people are just as highly qualified and motivated now as any time in our history. BUT we cannot be spread too thin, or we will be in trouble!!!!

Bill.

Thank you Bill -
You caught the reason I wrote this post in the first place, exactly.

Occasionally one will hear figures the USA has deployed 370,000 military in 120 countries today. I am not at all certain of the figures, but they are repeated at times. Also, I do not know if that includes stateside garrisons, guard and/or reserves. Except for those of us who are tuned directly into defense appropriations and weapons/equipment R&D, few have any way of knowing which systems our people need support for either.

Where the people and supplies might be used next is the question, and the cold war, if not ended, has heated up considerably in the recent several years... as you point out.

$4 billion monthly for Iraq, in this light, seems to be quite a lot of money for an open-ended campaign.

Default Lippizzaners Stallions

Guess that's why the 1/2ACR and Colonel Reed rescued the Lippizzaners at Hostau .
