reason #57 to be afraid of flying
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/pub/ltg/plane_japan.php
This link shows a plane being stuck by lightning while taking off from a runway in Japan. I hope the passengers brought along a change of underwear!

It appears that the jet was hit twice. Just for magnitude information, a static charge can contain anywhere from 15,000 - 35,000 volts per inch. the little spark you got from the door handle after walking across the rug could be 900 - 2,000 volts.
The reason people can survive a direct strike is not the voltage but the lack of amperage.
