Chuck Conners was the first NBA player to pull down a backboard. He had "a-cup-of-coffee" with the Boston Celtics and, during warmups before a pre-season game at the Boston Arena, he decided to show off to the crowd by dunking and hanging on the rim. He wound up pulling the damn thing down and the only spares were back at the Boston Garden which was hosting a rodeo. To add to the problems, the door to the storage room was where the bulls were penned. Red Auerbach had to pay a couple of drunk cowboys to go into the storage room to retrieve a backboard since none of the regular personnel would do it. They got the board and came out VERY sober.
