Then-Brig. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower awoke to an urgent call from military higher-ups informing him of the news from Pearl Harbor. Four hectic, harried days after that, Eisenhower received another call - this one demanding he "hop a plane" and travel to Washington to develop the U.S. response to Japanese aggression.
