Iran sentences accused CIA spy to death and two others to prison
Iran sentences accused CIA spy to death and two others to prison
By: Madison Dibble - Washington Examiner - 02-04-20 Re: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/n...hers-to-prison Iran ordered one person to die and two others to spend time in prison after accusing the trio of working for the Central Intelligence Agency to reveal state secrets. The Supreme Court of Iran confirmed the death sentence of Amir Rahimpour on Tuesday after the state alleged that Rahimpour was spying on behalf of the United States. Iran accused Rahimpour of attempting to pass information about the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. Gholamhossein Esmaili, a spokesman for the Iranian judiciary, noted that the death sentence would be carried out soon. Esmaili told Iranian state news, “While being in touch with the spy agency, he earned a lot of money as wages as he tried to deliver some information from Iran’s nuclear program to the American agency.” The spokesman added, “[Rahimpour] had been identified and prosecuted and sentenced to death and recently, the country’s National Supreme Court confirmed the sentence and, God willing, he will be punished soon.” Two additional individuals were sentenced to 15 years in prison each, 10 years for spying and five years for acting against Iranian national security. Esmaili explained, "Two ... CIA spies who were working under the cover of an organization and charitable foundation have been identified, tried and sentenced to 10 years in prison for spying and five years in prison for acting against national security.” None of the names or ages of the accused spies were released. The CIA has yet to release a statement on Iran’s allegations against those who were sentenced. Iran has ordered the death of several others after accusing them of spying for the U.S. In 2010, the country sentenced Shahram Amiri to death after claiming he defected to the U.S. for a period of time and then was welcomed back by the Iranian government only to be accused of spying on the nuclear program. Amiri's death became entangled in Hillary Clinton's email scandal because his name was included in some of the compromised data prior to his death. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have been elevated since Iran issued several attacks on U.S. bases via proxy groups in Iraq, prompting President Trump to order a drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personal note: These Middle East issues are growing by the day. Disturbing to say the least and those associated with either side will pay a hefty penalty if caught and charged. We all know internal issues of radical societies are always under investigation but those who do these assignments - if caught - isn't going to be pleasant. Countries all hate spies and deal with them harshly in all cases. Even the best laid plans can go awry and result in loss of human life either by torture or killed outright. Those who take those assignments are the bravest of all - but short lived when caught. Boats
