John McCain to Discontinue Treatment for Brain Cancer

RE: https://www.usnews.com/news/politics...r-brain-cancer

The senator announced last summer that he had been diagnosed with a glioblastoma (an advanced form of brain cancer). Glioblastoma forms in the tissue of the brain and the spinal cord. It is a very aggressive form of cancer.

SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, WHO was diagnosed with brain cancer last year, has decided to discontinue medical treatment, his family said in a statement Friday.

The Arizona Republican was diagnosed with a glioblastoma in July 2017 after undergoing surgery for a brain tumor. In an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" in September, McCain, who turns 82 next week, revealed his cancer prognosis was "very, very serious," and the chances of survival were low.

Despite the poor prognosis, McCain "has surpassed expectations," the statement says. However, due to the progression of the disease and his age, "he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment."

"Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious. In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival," the statement says. "But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment."

The statement continues:

"Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers. God bless and thank you all."

In a tweet alongside the statement, McCain's daughter Meghan McCain wrote, "My family is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity you have shown us during this past year. Thank you for all your continued support and prayers. We could not have made it this far without you - you've given us strength to carry on."

Following the announcement, people took to social media to show support for McCain and his family.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who ran against McCain in 2008 for the GOP presidential nomination, tweeted, "No man this century better exemplifies honor, patriotism, service, sacrifice, and country first than Senator John McCain. His heroism inspires, his life shapes our character. I am blessed and humbled by our friendship."

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tweeted that the news was "very sad," and "John, Cindy, and the entire McCain family are in our prayers at this incredibly difficult hour."

Additionally, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer tweeted: "My thoughts and prayers are with Senator McCain and his family."

Personal note: We here at the Patriot Files also send our best wishes to Mr. McCain and his family and friends. We wish him well and thank him for his service to our country and his service to the Senate during his term.

McCain opts to end medical treatment for his brain cancer

WASHINGTON — The family of Arizona Sen. John McCain announced Friday that he has decided to discontinue medical treatment for his brain cancer, likely ending any chance of him returning to Congress.

McCain, who will celebrate his 82nd birthday next week, is a Navy veteran and prisoner of war who became one of the most influential national security voices for the Republican party in recent decades. He has served in the Senate since 1987 but has been unable to travel to Washington, D.C., since late last year due to his illness.

His family said McCain came to the decision after months of intense medical treatments.

“Last summer, Sen. John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious,” their statement said. “In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.

“With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment.”

McCain is chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Staff there have emphasized in recent months that he has remained involved in that defense policy work even during his time at home in Arizona, with an eye toward his eventual return to Capitol Hill.

Friday’s announcement makes that possibility remote. McCain’s family expressed gratitude for “the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John’s many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers.”
