Statement By Secretary Johnson On The New NTAS Bulletin

Last December, I announced the revision of the Department of Homeland Security’s National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS), to include an NTAS “Bulletin.” NTAS Bulletins describe general developments or trends regarding threats of terrorism. We issued the most recent NTAS Bulletin in June, and it expires today.

The Department of Homeland Security is today issuing a new NTAS Bulletin. Here is what is stated in the new bulletin’s summary:

“Since the last NTAS Bulletin issued in June 2016, our basic assessment of the global threat environment has not changed. We remain concerned about homegrown violent extremists who could strike the homeland with little or no notice. Events since the last NTAS Bulletin reinforce this. Accordingly, increased public vigilance and awareness continue to be of utmost importance. This was, for example, a crucial component of the swift response to the September terrorist acts in New York City and New Jersey.”

This new Bulletin has a duration of six months, and will expire on May 15, 2017.

The full weight of the U.S. government – including our military, intelligence, law enforcement and homeland security communities, along with our state and local law enforcement partners – is dedicated to detecting and defeating terrorism and protecting the homeland. This is our number one priority. In today’s threat environment, which includes the prospect of homegrown violent extremism, the public has a role to play too. The NTAS Bulletin released today contributes to an informed public, and promotes their vigilance and awareness.
