How now, brown CAU: The steaks are high in Benet Street

Previously occupied by Barclay’s Bank, it’s been undergoing a steady transformation for a year now and has just begun a new life as the base for a proper, honest to goodness South American steakhouse in CAU. CAU is a small chain, with another branch in Guildford, that provides food with ‘an Argentinian twist’ and a heavy bias towards steaks, burgers and steak sandwiches. The growing rennovation of banks into pubs and restaurants has been a feature of high street life for a couple of decades now, but don’t expect the grand banking hall that’s such a feature of Jamie’s Restaurant over the road. CAU has a more modern building, and has fitted it out with a design that can only be described as 2001 meets Pampas. Expect white leather booths, a contemporary steel spiral staircase, lots of shiny surfaces, large scale graphics and some of the most uncomfortable-looking chairs known to humans. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, CAU’s speciality is Argentinean beef, wet-aged and served as steaks or burgers. The steaks come in classic cuts (rump, sirloin, rib-eye), and also some interesting South American variations such as the Lomito (a fillet of rump with a blue cheese sauce) or the monster Tira de Ancho (an 18 oz spiral cut of rib eye marinaded in chimichurri). If you prefer your red meat in a bun, there is a good range of burgers and steak sandwiches. For a steak house, CAU has a well balanced menu, with a number of interesting fish dishes, and for vegetarians there are some appropriately robust and original alternatives. When you add in an attractive range of starters, side orders, salads and puddings (it’s a problem choosing between the tempting desserts), there’s every chance you’re going to need to be rolled out of the door. Alongside the food is a drinks list that provides an equally wide range of refreshment, from smoothies to cocktails to clericots (a sort of wine-based cocktail). We particularly like the way the wine list is divided between ‘nice whites/nice reds’ and very nice whites/nice reds’. The wines are largely Argentinean, with a few diversions into France and Spain. Overall, CAU looks like a promising, if pricey, addition to the Cambridge scene. It’s been open since the end of January and the carnivorous population of Cambridge should rejoice!
