Russia's Hermes Guided Missiles Will Make Short Work Of NATO Tanks (And Bunkers)

(Personal note: Ever notice right after we put out our new tank designs Russia comes out shortly thereafter with a similar looking tank? - It makes you wonder how they got such a similar design? - Boats)

The Hermes can be employed against enemy armor but is also stated to be effective against command or staff vehicles, communications centers and depots.

Here's What You Need To Remember: The Hermes, which has an autonomous missile guidance system of the fire-and-forget type, is also capable of being fired from aerial drones and naval platforms. It could be a game-changer in the anti-tank platform arena, and could certainly challenge Israel’s Spike missiles while making the American Javelin anti-tank system look downright antiquated.

In Greek mythology, Hermes was the protector of human heralds, travelers, thieves and merchants—and he functioned as an emissary and messenger of the gods. Russia’s newly unveiled new generation of Hermes guided weapon system could send a very powerful message, as the long-range supersonic missile could destroy a western tank with an almost 100 percent guarantee.

The Shipunov Design Bureau, which is part of the High Precision Systems Company within the state tech corporation Rostec, officially introduced the new missile at Russia’s Army-2020 International Military and Technical Forum, which was held at the Patriot Congress and Exhibition Center of the Russian Armed Forces in Kubinka outside of Moscow.

“Following the results of a full cycle of the Hermes trials at the proving ground with the destruction of various types of targets, a conclusion was made that just one missile of the system will be enough to reliably eliminate any existing Western tank,” the company’s representative told Tass, adding that the destruction probability was 98-99 percent as the missile may deviate only by some fifty centimeters from the target even when it is fired to a maximum range of one hundred kilometers.

The new munitions will reportedly fly at four times the speed of sound. It could occupy a specific niche between precision munitions and artillery mission systems.

Quite the Message

State media reported that the Hermes anti-tank guided weapon system comprises several reconnaissance and guidance drones, which can help it detect and even illuminate a target. The system also features a compact combat module with launchers for six missiles—and it can deliver salvo fire against six targets at a time. The missiles each carry a high explosive fragmentation warhead with twenty kilograms of TNT.

The Hermes can be employed against enemy armor but is also stated to be effective against command or staff vehicles, communications centers and depots. The module can be mounted on any chassis including those of armored vehicles, which could give existing platforms a bit more punch.

Russia also announced last week that the 38th R&D and Testing Institute of Armored Hardware and Armament has released a report on how the T-14 Armata Main Battle Tank could be upgraded with a new unmanned turret and up-armed with a more powerful cannon—one that could also fire supersonic sub-caliber armor-piercing projectiles, fuel-air explosive munitions and even missiles based on the “fire and forget and fire again” principle.

Note: Are Russian tanks any good?
Re: https://nationalinterest.org/blog/bu...s-russia-85936

Both tanks are good at what they are designed for, but the design goals are different. In general, Russian tanks are designed for attack and American tanks are designed for defense. ... Without decent depression, you have to expose your entire tank. The thing is, hull down is important only if you are on the defense.

Note: Russia with its 12,950 tanks unsurprisingly has the biggest armor holdings. The United States is the number-two tank power with 6,333 vehicles. as of Jun 16, 2020.

T-14 Armata

The T-14 Armata tank is the premier next-generation Russian Main Battle Tank. Although not battle-tested, the T-14 platform utilizes several innovative design features that make it potentially the deadliest tank in the world.

In keeping with legacy Soviet design, the T-14 is very light for a main battle tank at just forty-eight tons (some M1 Abrams variants tip the scales in excess of sixty-nine tons). Combined with an unmanned turret equipped with an autoloader and a crew of just three, it is also quite compact.

Under normal operating conditions, the powerful 1,500 diesel engine gives the T-14 an incredible power/weight ratio of 31 hp/ton (for reference, the M1 has a power/weight ratio of 23–27 hp/ton, depending on the variant). Short bursts of higher performance at 2,000 hp output bring this ratio to nearly 42 hp/ton, making the T-14 incredibly nimble, but this boost in performance drastically shortens engine service life.

The T-14 sports three layers of defense. The crew compartment is surrounded by an armored capsule that is reportedly equivalent to over 900mm of rolled homogeneous armor. Both the turret and tank body are covered with Russia’s newest 4th generation Malachit explosive-reactive armor specifically designed to reduce penetration by armor-piercing sabot rounds.

Lastly, the T-14 also employs the Afghanit active protection system, which uses Doppler radar to detect and intercept or deflect incoming projectiles with an explosive charge, although efficacy against depleted-uranium sabot rounds is questionable.

With Russia there will be Tanks Forever

The Soviet Union probably produced more battle-tested tanks than any other country, although their designs were hardly perfect. Still, simplicity and ease of use resulted in exports being delivered all over the world, some of which are still used today. The T-14 Armata probably won’t be seen in huge numbers anytime soon— but that doesn’t make it any less deadly.

Topic: Top 10 Main Battle Tanks
Re: http://www.military-today.com/tanks/...ttle_tanks.htm

It starts out like this: Often we receive many questions which is the best main battle tank in the world. Which is the greatest modern MBT and why. Our Top 10 analysis is based on the combined score of protection, firepower, accuracy and mobility. None of the tanks listed here have seen combat against each other during military operations yet. And even though some things, such as armor composition, are kept in high secrecy, we know a lot about these machines. Data on their protection, firing range, accuracy, capabilities of their fire control systems, and so on are widely available. So we know capabilities of each of these tanks. This analysis is based on specifications and available data.

All of the tanks mentioned here are incredibly powerful and devastating. However crew training of the tank is also an important factor, as performance of the actual tank depends from the crew performance.

This list do not contains tanks that are currently under development, at the prototype stage or tanks that never reach production. The only exception here is the Russian Armata which was produced in small numbers for testing and evaluation, but is not yet produced in quantity.
