Default Maybe you can help me?

I am looking for information about my father. He passed away before I realized that there was so much I didn't know about him. I am now trying to tell my boys about thier granddad but I have no information about him. I know he served in Korea and Vietnam from 1963-1971. I know he was injured. I know he received the U.S. Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Purple Heart. I also have this stuff written on a slip of paper that says Company C, 8th Battalion, 3rd Regiment. This is all I know but I would really love to hear more. If anyone knows where I might find a place where people might go that were where he was, or if anyone can elaborate on what this battalion and regiment stuff is, please let me know. Oh, his name was Charles L. Long and I believe it was Army. I just found something on Military.com naming him Rank E5 Seargeant.

Go to this web site and follow the instructions.

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/mil...e-records.html

Also request a updated copy of his DD 214 and on the left side of the web page you’ll see a link for requesting a set of his medals and awards. You can use the new eVetRecs on line for requesting his records. Being his next of kin you can make the request for records. The next of kin can be any of the following: surviving spouse that has not remarried, father, mother, son, daughter, sister, or brother.

Also about the Company C, 8th battalion, 3rd regiment ... do you have a division name to go with that info? If so there are a lot of unit associations that have web sites. Get a division name and I'll do some searching.

I've been looking around and can't find Company C, 8th battalion, 3rd regiment. Check and see if it's 3rd battalion 8th infantry regiment for that would make more sense. During the Vietnam War there were no units with an 8th battalion.

Default Ma'am!

Ma'am!

Regarding your fathers unit.... I agree with mr Farnie. It most likely should be "C-company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Rgt, 4th Inf Div", and not "8th Battalion, 3rd Inf Rgt". There were no US Infantry units in Viet Nam, by a Battalion-designation/numbering as high as "8th".

Regarding your fathers unit, besides the links for US National Archives that mr Farnie posted to you, please also do check following websites out, and contact the webmaster of the first site also, for additional assistans!

The 3rd Bn 8th Inf Rgt chapter website:
http://www.ivydragoons.org

A messageboard/forum dedicated for men whom served in the 4th Inf Div, which within your fathers unit was a part:

The Ivy-division forum, webmaster "Bob P":
http://pub6.bravenet.com/forum/484734543

Best of luck in your further research pertaining your fathers service!

Sincerely
A.B
