McBride 48th Fighter Wing PAO published: July 11, 2013 Share This: Tweet Comments ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England* -- An updated Balanced Eating, Workout Effectively, and Live Long program at RAF Lakenheath's Health and Wellness Center is slated to take effect Aug. 1. Airmen are repeatedly tested on physical fitness to ensure they maintain standards. The test is a four-part fitness assessment comprised of push-up and sit-up performances, an abdominal circumference measurement and a timed 1.5 mile run. Currently, when an Airman fails to meet the minimum fitness standard, the individual is required to take BE WELL, an educational 3 hour course that provides them with resources to optimize fitness. However, the new program, BE WELL 2.0, offers different intervention options such as Better Body Better Life, separate strength and cardio programs, Military One Source Personal Heath Coach, and BE WELL online. "The idea is phenomenal," said Geoffrey Miller, 48th Aerospace Medicine Squadron exercise physiologist. "The objective is to ensure Airmen take ownership versus being reactive and forced into only one option." According to the HAWC, if an Airman fails the fitness assessment, their unit fitness program manager and commander will be notified, and they will be enrolled into one of the available courses with the option to participate in more. The change in the program is due to the recognition that expecting a behavioral change is unrealistic for one 2-3 hour class. According to an information brief given to commanders, mandatory attendance has proven to be less effective which is the reason for wide variations in available options. Implementing major programs with low manning may take time, added Miller. Patience is important throughout the transition process. For more information, contact the HAWC at DSN 226-2710 or 01638 522710.
